DATCP confirms that an unvaccinated six-year-old Quarter Horse mare in Brown County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).

West Nile Virus (WNV) can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). Symptoms of WNV in horses include fever, loss of coordination, hind-end weakness, depression, loss of appetite, muscle tremors, teeth grinding, inability to swallow, head pressing, excessive sweating, and going down with an inability to rise. The disease can cause brain inflammation in horses and people, and it is fatal in 30-40% of horses showing signs of illness.

WNV is transmitted by mosquitoes. Horses cannot transmit WNV to humans, but mosquitoes can. Implement mosquito control and mosquito bite prevention to protect your horses and yourselves!

There is a very effective vaccine to prevent WNV in equines. Please talk with your veterinarian about equine vaccination.

🌾 It’s that time of year! Stocking up and storing hay for winter is an important investment, so don’t let your hard-earned hay wither away.

☔️ Cover Outdoor Bales – Use a tarp or durable plastic cover to cut storage losses by half. For round bales, net wrap or B-wrap protects better than twine.

🐁 Water & Animal Proof Your Storage Site – Avoid stacking hay under a leaky roof, which can lead to mold. Plug rodent holes and keep out wildlife — they can move in for the winter and make a mess. F***s from some wildlife can spread diseases to horses.

🪜Keep Hay Off the Ground – Store indoor and outdoor bales on pallets to allow air flow under the bales and help prevent moisture absorption from the ground. Hay stored on wet ground can cause up to 50% spoilage.

⏰ Use Older Hay First – Properly baled and stored hay can last indefinitely, but should be fed within two years of harvest. High humidity and temperature swings can increase the moisture content of hay and reduce its storage life.

🌳 Store Round Bales Smartly – When storing outdoors, place round bales end to end and do not stack them. Stacking round bales stored outdoors can increase losses by trapping moisture and limiting drying from the wind and sun. Avoid storing bales under trees or in low-lying areas.

horse person that can work with Arabians. From youngsters to retired horses and keep show horses in shape when home.
Must know how to lunge , wrap, bathe, assess fitness and health.
Prefer someone with experience working with young stock.
Person will also help with day to day operations
And other projects as they come up.

Most grasses found in Midwest hay and pastures are safe for horses, but some seedheads can cause physical injury to the mouth, eyes, skin, or digestive tract. Here are a few common species that are generally considered safe and others that pose a risk. This is not a complete list.

✅ Safe seedheads
-Kentucky bluegrass
-Timothy
-Smooth bromegrass
-Orchardgrass
-Meadow fescue
-Perennial ryegrass

🛑 Harmful seedheads
-All foxtail grasses. Common foxtails in the Midwest include yellow foxtail, foxtail barley, green foxtail, and giant foxtail.
-Ticklegrass
-Sandbur

Positions filled for the summer!
We are hiring!
Looking for 1-2 people, currently part- time Must be able to work alternating week-ends must be able to work around horses and work as a team member. Prefer someone that can work year round.

1-horse savvy person to help with our youngsters, oldies and keep the show horses in shape when home. This also includes daily barn chores

2-person to help with all the upkeep and projects we have including but not limited to; feeding,grooming,general cleaning mowing, fence clearing,and stalls. Projects as they arise. Must be able to work on own and with others

Additional info:
20-30 hours per week more hours depending on season.
