Free f***l water—it’s common, frustrating, and usually messy. 💩

If you’ve dealt with persistent watery discharge alongside otherwise formed manure, check out this helpful article from TheHorse.com on Free F***l Water Syndrome and some of the factors that may contribute to it.

🎉 Please join us in welcoming Dr. Amanda Bowen to Iron Horse Equine!

We’re excited to have Amanda Bowen, DVM joining our veterinary team—and she is now accepting new clients and appointments!

Dr. Bowen earned her DVM from the University of Illinois in 2023 before coming to Colorado for an internship with Colorado State University’s Equine Field Service, followed by an ABVP (Equine) residency at CSU from 2024–2026.

Her professional interests include equine dentistry, ophthalmology, emergency medicine and surgery, and she especially enjoys client education and building long-term relationships with horse owners.

Adding another veterinarian to the Iron Horse team also means greater daytime availability for urgent and emergency cases, helping us provide more prompt care when our clients and their horses need us unexpectedly.

When she isn't working with horses, you might find Dr. Bowen hiking, camping, fly fishing, tending her impressive collection of plants—or searching Colorado for the perfect chai latte. 🌱☕

Dr. Bowen is now scheduling appointments and welcoming new clients in Elizabeth and throughout our Front Range service area.

One date we especially want our pregnant-mare owners to have on their calendars: months 5, 7 & 9.

Vaccination against EHV-1 during these stages of gestation is an important part of broodmare preventive care. At Iron Horse Equine, we stock Prestige® Prodigy® and recommend EHV-1 vaccination at the beginning of months 5, 7 and 9 of gestation for our pregnant mares.

August is peak rabies season in Colorado.

Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment data show an average of about 80 confirmed animal rabies cases each year, with cases peaking sharply in August. Bats account for the largest share of confirmed cases during the summer months, with skunks also contributing to Colorado’s rabies activity.

For horse owners, it’s a good seasonal reminder to check your horse’s vaccination records and make sure their rabies protection is current.

Information about Adequan i.m. Recall:

American Regent, Inc. Animal Health (the manufacturer of Adequan i.m. is conducting a nationwide recall of two lots (24416 and 25265P) of Adequan® i.m. Injection (for horses), 500mg/5 mL single-dose 5mL vials to the consumer level. The products are being recalled due to the presence of glass fibers found during testing of internally retained samples.

**Stop using the recalled product lots immediately. Contact our office if your horses have experienced any problems that may be related to using the recalled products.** Administering intramuscular injectable products containing particulate matter, like glass fibers, may result in local irritation, swelling, inflammation, injection site pain, infection, or abscesses. To date, the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recalled lots.

Adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of this product may also be reported to the FDA at 1-888-FDA-VETS or online at http://www.FDA.gov/reportanimalae. This recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Iron Horse Equine Clients: If you have either of these lots 24416 or 25265P
1. Immediately identify and quarantine all affected products in your possession.
2. Discontinue use of the affected product.
3. Please bring your remaining quantity in for us to send back to American Regent and pick up your replacement vials.
Please note: No other Adequan i.m. lots are impacted by this action.
