Why is Lunging and Long-Lining important? Glad you asked! 😉
In correct training - especially for disciplines requiring high levels of balance like dressage. They are sophisticated tools for developing the horse's body without the interference of a rider's weight.
Why they are considered essential:
1. Developing "Correct" musculature:
When a horse is worked without a rider, they can find their own natural balance.
* Core Strength - Encourages the horse to lift their back and engage their abdominal muscles.
* Topline Development:
Allows the neck to stretch "long and low," which strengthens the topline and prepares the back to carry a rider comfortably.
2. Benefits of Long-Lining: "Riding from the Ground."
* Because you have two lines, if offers more control than a single lunge line.
* Straightness: By keeping the horse between the reins it helps to prevent the haunches from swinging out.
* Lateral Work: You can teach complex lateral movements.
* Confidence: For young horses it teaches a horse to move forward into the contact and steer without concern of a rider on their back.
3. Improving the "Training Scale":
In the dressage training scale, Rhythm and Relaxation are the foundation.
* Observations: Allows the trainer to view how the horse is moving from the ground. Gives a different perspective of the horse's gaits and to see any issues that might not be felt while riding.
* Voice Commands: It solidifies the horse's response to your voice.
4. Safety and Mental Preparation:
* Lunging provides a safe outlet for a "fresh" horse to get the bucks out before getting on. It also helps with getting the horse to focus on their trainer and settle into the work. Very helpful when in a new
or distracting environment.
