After years of working with dogs, one thing has become very clear...

Everyone loves a success story. Everyone loves the transformation photos, the training videos, the happy endings, and the dogs that beat the odds.

What people don't always see are the difficult conversations that happen before those success stories ever exist. The dogs that nobody wants to take a chance on. The dogs that come with uncertainty. The dogs whose future hangs in the balance while everyone waits for someone else to step forward.

That dog is Bailey.

Bailey is currently facing an uncertain future because of a single bite incident during what appears to have been one of the most stressful periods of his life.

This is not a dog with a documented history of repeated aggression. This is not a dog that has spent years creating safety concerns. This is a dog whose owner is currently serving our country, whose entire world changed almost overnight, and who suddenly found himself in a completely different environment with different people, different routines, and different stressors.

One incident.

Yet in today's world, sometimes one incident is all it takes for a dog to be labeled.

Maybe Bailey has stuck with me because he shares a name with my daughter.

Maybe it's because every time I think about this case, I picture a young servicemember focused on training and serving our country, trusting that his best friend is safe while he's away. I can't imagine being in his shoes and receiving a phone call that the dog who waited for him, loved him, and depended on him was suddenly gone because of one bad moment during one difficult chapter of his life.

Or maybe it's because dogs like Bailey are exactly why I opened ABTK9.

The truth is, I've lost sleep over this dog.

I've laid awake thinking about how quickly life can change for a dog who has no say in the circumstances around him. A dog who didn't choose for his owner to leave. A dog who didn't choose the changes in his environment, his routine, or the stress that came with it.

Because at the end of the day, Bailey isn't just a bite report, a case number, or a liability concern.

He's somebody's best friend.

He's somebody's family.

And until proven otherwise, I believe he deserves the opportunity to be evaluated, understood, and given a fair chance.

The reality is that Bailey's situation has highlighted a difficult truth within animal welfare. Many organizations are already overwhelmed. Resources are limited. Liability concerns are real. As a result, dogs with any bite history, even when circumstances matter, often struggle to find advocates willing or able to step forward.

That doesn't make anyone the villain. It simply means that dogs like Bailey can easily fall through the cracks.

At ABTK9, we've always believed that behavior should be evaluated within the context of the whole dog, not reduced to a single moment on their worst day.

One of my long-term goals has been to establish The Canine Comeback Project.

Not a rescue.

Not a shelter.

A program dedicated to evaluating, training, advocating for, and creating opportunities for dogs who have been misunderstood, mislabeled, or judged solely by their mistakes.

Some of the best dogs I've ever worked with came with baggage. Some came with fear. Some came with behavioral challenges. Some came with stories that caused others to walk away.

What they needed wasn't someone to excuse their behavior.

What they needed was someone willing to understand it, address it, and help them move forward.. so Bailey will be coming to ABTK9.

We're going to evaluate him honestly. We're going to train him responsibly. We're going to identify his strengths, address his weaknesses, and work toward earning his Canine Good Citizen title.

Most importantly, we're going to give him the opportunity to be seen for who he is, not just what happened.

Because one moment should not automatically define an entire life.

As a small business, I fully recognize what this commitment means. A kennel occupied by a long-term project dog is kennel space that cannot be sold. Training, evaluations, veterinary care, management, and daily handling all require time and resources.

ABTK9 has always done more than its fair share for shelter dogs, rescue dogs, and difficult cases because it's the right thing to do. But helping dogs like Bailey isn't free, and community support allows us to continue saying "yes" when others may not have the ability to.

For those who have asked how they can help:

๐Ÿพ For those wishing to contribute toward Bailey's care, donations may be made directly to his veterinary account at Eastern Shore Animal Hospital in Grandy, NC. Please reference: Ashley Conner / ABTK9 โ€“ Bailey.

๐Ÿพ Schedule a training session, purchase a training package, or reserve a Day Training trial day. Even if your dog simply needs a refresher on manners, leash walking, confidence building, or obedience, every appointment helps support dogs like Bailey.

๐Ÿพ Beginning Monday, ABTK9 will be offering:
โ€ข 10% OFF Training Packages
โ€ข 5% OFF Future Boarding Reservations

Every appointment, every reservation, every share, and every donation helps make it possible for us to continue taking on dogs that need a second chance.

Most importantly, share Bailey's story.

Let's show people what can happen when a dog is given an opportunity to learn, grow, and be understood rather than being permanently defined by a single event.

Welcome to the ABTK9 family, Bailey.

I don't know what the outcome of this journey will be. I don't know where it will lead or who may ultimately fall in love with you along the way.

What I do know is that as long as you're here, you'll be treated with compassion, fairness, and dignity.

You'll be evaluated as the dog you are, not the label that's been placed on you.

And because somewhere, a young servicemember is actively training to defend our country while hoping his best friend will still be here when he comes home, we're going to make sure every possible opportunity is given before anyone decides your future.

The Canine Comeback Project was created for dogs exactly like you.

Dogs who need someone willing to look beyond their worst day.

Dogs who deserve a second chance.

Dogs worth fighting for.

YOUR COMEBACK STARTS NOW. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Yesterday, our trainer Ashley answered a knock at the door while in the middle of a training session. Standing there was a kind woman who simply wanted to personally congratulate ABTK9 on being named a finalist for Best Pet Boarding/Daycare in the 2026 Best of the Albemarle. ๐Ÿ†2๏ธโƒฃ6๏ธโƒฃ

It's hard to put into words what moments like this mean.

When ABTK9 opened in 2024, we were a small facility with one training unit, a passion for helping dogs, and a hope that our community would trust us with the animals they love most.

Today, we look around and see so much more than a dog training and boarding facility.

We see puppies we've watched grow up.

We see rescue dogs who found confidence.

We see families who became friends.

We see clients who have supported us, encouraged us, referred us, and believed in us every step of the way.

Every dog that walks through our doors becomes part of the ABTK9 family, and every owner who trusts us with their dog becomes part of our story.

This recognition isn't about a business.

It's about a community.

A community of incredible dog lovers who have allowed us to do what we love every single day.

To everyone who has trusted us with your dogs, recommended us to a friend, shared our posts, voted for us, or simply supported us along the way, thank you.

Thank you for helping us grow.

Thank you for believing in us.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your dogs' lives.

Most importantly, thank you for making ABTK9 feel like family.

We are truly humbled, incredibly grateful, and so proud to serve this amazing community.

If you've noticed an increase in Australian Cattle Dogs around ABTK9 lately, you're absolutely right... and that's no accident. โค๏ธ

At ABTK9, we are passionate supporters of our local rescue and shelter community. Many incredible dogs simply need guidance, structure, education, and the right support system to be successful. That's why we are proud to partner with Bluey's Hope 4 Horses & Heelers, helping provide resources to both rescue organizations and adopters throughout the adoption process.

From behavioral evaluations upon intake, to foster support, adoption transition planning, training recommendations, and post-adoption guidance, our goal is simple:

Help more dogs stay in homes and fewer dogs enter shelters.

๐Ÿพ Behavioral Evaluations
๐Ÿพ Foster & Rescue Support
๐Ÿพ Adoption Transition Assistance
๐Ÿพ Training Plans & Behavior Consultations
๐Ÿพ In-Person & Virtual Support Available

Whether you're a rescue, shelter, foster, or adopter, having professional behavioral guidance early can make all the difference in setting both the dog and family up for long-term success.

Red is the latest heeler to join us on his training journey, and we're excited to help him continue building confidence, skills, and a bright future. We can't wait to watch him grow!

๐Ÿ“ข Attention Rescues & Shelters:

ABTK9 is happy to extend these same services to other rescue organizations and shelters. If your organization could benefit from behavioral evaluations, adoption support, foster guidance, or professional training resources, we'd love to help.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉต HADES IS LOOKING ABSOLUTELY HANDSOME! ๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ’™

Can we all take a moment to appreciate just how amazing Hades looks in his beautiful muzzle from The Muzzle Movement.

More importantly, we're incredibly proud of the progress this boy has made throughout his training journey. Hades continues to show that when dogs are given patience, clear communication, and positive experiences, they can build confidence and thrive.

At ABTK9, we are HUGE advocates for basket muzzle conditioning and training.

A muzzle is not a punishment. A muzzle is not a sign of a "bad dog." A muzzle is simply another safety tool, just like a leash, harness, crate, or seatbelt.

Whether you're working through:
๐Ÿพ Dog-to-dog reactivity
๐Ÿพ Dog-to-human concerns
๐Ÿพ Scavenging and eating unsafe items
๐Ÿพ Veterinary appointments
๐Ÿพ Grooming visits ๐Ÿพ Emergency situations ๐Ÿพ Recovery after injury or surgery

A properly fitted basket muzzle can provide an incredible amount of safety, confidence, and peace of mind for everyone involved.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that dogs "hate" muzzles. The truth is, most dogs dislike being rushed, forced, or having equipment introduced improperly. When muzzle training is done correctly through positive reinforcement and gradual conditioning, dogs learn that wearing their muzzle predicts great things.

In fact, many muzzle-trained dogs become excited when they see their muzzle because it has been paired with treats, enrichment, walks, adventures, and positive experiences.

Muzzle training shouldn't be a fight.

When fitted properly and conditioned appropriately, a basket muzzle allows dogs to pant, drink water, take treats, sniff, and enjoy life while adding an additional layer of safety and management when needed.

This is one of the many reasons we love The Muzzle Movement. They have become a huge advocate for dogs and their owners by helping educate the public, reduce muzzle stigma, and create thoughtfully designed muzzles that prioritize both safety and comfort.

A muzzle doesn't limit a dog's quality of life. A muzzle can help protect it.

Way to go, Hades! We are so proud of the hard work you've put in and can't wait to see what you accomplish next! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿพ Congratulations to Fancy on Passing Her AKC Advanced Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) Test Today! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ‰

Today was a very special day at ABTK9 as Fancy officially earned her AKC Advanced Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) title! ๐Ÿ’™

Watching Fancy succeed today was about so much more than passing a test. It was a reminder of why we do what we do.

There is something incredibly rewarding about watching a dog who once struggled with confidence slowly learn that the world is not such a scary place. Seeing a dog go from uncertainty and hesitation to walking through new situations with confidence, trust, and enthusiasm is one of the greatest gifts of being a trainer.

Fancy has worked hard to get here. Her journey has been built on patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and the strong bond she shares with her family. Today, all of that hard work paid off.

For those unfamiliar with the AKC Advanced Canine Good Citizen (CGCA) program, it is designed to evaluate dogs in real-world situations beyond the basic Canine Good Citizen test. Dogs must demonstrate advanced manners, self-control, and reliability while navigating everyday environments.

Skills evaluated include:

๐Ÿพ Walking politely through crowds.

๐Ÿพ Maintaining composure around distractions.

๐Ÿพ Demonstrating reliable sit, down, and stay behaviors.

๐Ÿพ Remaining calm during interactions with strangers.

๐Ÿพ Showing good leash manners in public settings.

๐Ÿพ Responding appropriately to unexpected situations.

๐Ÿพ Displaying confidence and stability in a variety of environments.

The CGCA helps ensure that dogs can be respectful, well-mannered members of their communities while strengthening the relationship between dog and handler.

As an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, our trainer, Ashley Conner, loves helping teams work toward these milestones. While titles and certificates are wonderful accomplishments, the real reward is seeing dogs gain confidence, improve communication with their families, and learn how to successfully navigate the world around them.

Fancy, we are so proud of you. ๐Ÿ’™

Your journey is proof that progress is possible, confidence can be built, and every small step forward matters.

Help us congratulate Fancy on this amazing accomplishment! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™

Miss Chloe absolutely rocked her short off-site session with us today. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿพ

Today wasnโ€™t about pushing for a marathon training adventure, it was about quality over quantity. We got some great practice in, worked on engagement, confidence, and making good choices out in the real world, then wrapped things up while she was still feeling successful and happy. That matters.

With the warmer weather rolling in, itโ€™s important to remember that dogs can overheat much faster than we do, especially during training, outings, or higher excitement activities. Sometimes the smartest training decision is knowing when to call it a win and end on a positive note before your dog becomes mentally or physically fatigued. โ˜€๏ธ

Short, successful sessions build confidence far better than long sessions that leave dogs overwhelmed, frustrated, or exhausted.

Chloe understood the assignment today, and we are so proud of this sweet girl. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿถ

Welcome Scottie back to ABTK9 ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–ค

Some of you may remember Scottieโ€™s storyโ€ฆ this boy survived being trapped under a bulkhead and was found nearly at deathโ€™s door. Watching where he started compared to where he is now has been nothing short of incredible.

In the beginning of our training sessions, Scottie was extremely nervous and unsure of the world around him. When conflicted or overwhelmed, his first response was flight, hiding, avoiding, and trying to disappear from situations that made him uncomfortable. And honestly? Considering what this dog has survived, nobody could blame him.

But look at him now.

Scottie is learning that the world is not so scary. Instead of immediately shutting down or fleeing, he is choosing to stay, engage, think through situations, and build confidence one step at a time. That kind of progress deserves to be celebrated.

Confidence building in dogs is not about โ€œforcingโ€ them to face fears. It is about creating safe experiences, allowing choice, building trust, and helping them learn they can successfully navigate the world. Dogs like Scottie remind people that healing is not always loud or flashy, sometimes it looks like a dog simply deciding to stay present instead of running away.

We are so proud of this boy and how far he has come. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

Welcome Maggie to ABTK9 ๐Ÿ’š

This sweet girl is joining us for private sessions to help build a little more confidence in the world around her. ๐Ÿพ

A lot of people picture training issues as loud, chaotic, or โ€œbadโ€ behaviors, but confidence struggles can be much quieter. Sometimes it looks like hesitation, nervousness in new places, uncertainty around unfamiliar things, clinginess, or simply shutting down when overwhelmed.

Confidence building is one of the MOST important parts of training because dogs that feel safe and capable tend to make better choices overall.

For dogs like Maggie, we focus on:

โœ” Building positive experiences
โœ” Teaching problem solving skills
โœ” Helping them work through stress appropriately
โœ” Creating structure and predictability
โœ” Allowing the dog to succeed without pressure or flooding

One of the biggest mistakes owners make with nervous dogs is accidentally overwhelming them by trying to force socialization or โ€œmake them get used to it.โ€ Real confidence is built through patience, consistency, and allowing the dog to move at a pace where they can still learn successfully.

Weโ€™re excited to help this adorable girl continue coming out of her shell and show her that the world is not such a scary place after all. โœจ
