Roo is doing so well and filling out beautifully. She joined the farm on Christmas Eve in very poor condition (check the videos to see), and every step of the way has been the sweetest, kindest little mare.
Starvation cases are rehabbed slowly and safely, with the emphasis on good fodder. Many people want the horses to fill out as quickly as possible, but too much too quickly can be problematic and even deadly for horses in recovery.
She looks like a mini-me of Murphy, but with little ankle socks on. I joke that she passed up Arabian, and is now Thoroughbred, on her way back to her Quarter Horse build.
Donations to help feed and care for the animals are always needed and appreciated.

This is sanctuary. Animals who have been saved, rehabilitated, and are enjoying their life of safety and care. Finnegan (palomino) and Murphy (OTTB) joined Browndog farm from very different places.
Murphy, the chestnut Thoroughbred, is an ex-racehorse who ran in Florida, and who ended up as a no-sale at an auction in Texas, where he was saved from the horse slaughter pipeline. He also is a very well trained eventing horse. How did he slip through the cracks?
Finnegan, the palomino, was going to be shot by his previous owner for being viscous and aggressive- attacking people and “stomping farriers into the ground”. It took Eileen two months to convince his owner not to shoot him, and to let him come to Browndog Farm for rehabilitation. It has taken years of patience and work, but he is the sweetest horse, and seems to have some pretty fancy moves, also.
Supporting Browndog Farm allows Murphy, Finnegan, and the rest of the crew to be guaranteed a safe home for the rest of their lives, and to not have to worry about falling into bad hands or falling through the cracks ever again.

Photos from last night, but it’s every bit as beautiful tonight as well.
The past two weeks have been trying. It’s been one of those streaks when it feels like the hits keep coming, lol, like a kid at the beach getting nailed by the next wave as soon as the manage to get up from being pummeled by the last. One of the things that popped up was my truck suddenly running poorly on my way to work. Poorly enough that I didn’t trust it to cross 95 without a traffic light. Big Blue and I have talked, and he’s a youthful 2003 with a mere 317k miles, and he must have forgotten that he’s not supposed to have troubles. My plan was to pick up a roundbale of hay after school, but sadly, my Subaru can’t carry a roundbale. It can, however, easily carry 4 good sized square bales with plenty of room to spare. I totally could have gotten more, lol. It worked out well, since I don’t have to carry bales and aggravate my back, I just drove through the pasture making stops and slangin’ flakes like I was the ice cream man dishin’ out bomb pops.
A huge shoutout to my amazing neighbor Sheri Pagel Williams, aka the baby goat whisperer, for picking up and delivering more squares for me today while I was at an appointment after work We’re going to use her truck and my flatbed to get some roundies tomorrow afternoon when I’m done Homebound teaching, so the donkeys can stop calling for Sarah McLaughlin.
One thing when you have horses, you spend a whole lot of money on dead grass. 🤷🏻‍♀️🌾

I have been so busy, and so spread thin, I’ve really dropped the ball on keeping the farm’s page updated with pics and videos.
I may just start doing photo dumps each week, with a quick summary of what’s going on.
My response is always “I wish”, when people tell me they’re surprised to hear I have a “real job” and that taking care of the farm isn’t my only focus. For those who don’t know me well, I’m the biology teacher and special education case manager for the local school district’s alternative high school campus. I also teach Homebound students after regular school hours. I take care of everything at the farm by myself, and I also have a major spinal fusion revision surgery on the horizon, so I’m also swamped with pre-op appointments, testing, screenings/imaging, and physical therapy.
Anywayyyy… all that to say I’m sorry for bot keeping social media current. Maybe the farm needs a social media director. The pay sucks, but you can pet as many animals as you can stand, lol!!
Everyone have a wonderful week, and please post any questions you might have about the farm or any of the residents here.

A good update from the wonderful Dr Cohen at Jlc Veterinary Service yesterday (Saturday). He said Tux is continuing to recover, and is getting around better. Tux spent the majority of the day outside and seems happy. Accommodations have been prepared at the farm, and Tux should be able to come home to continue his recovery either today (Sunday) or tomorrow (Monday).
