Lake Region Small Animal Center Lake Region Small Animal is a small animal veterinary clinic servicing West Central Minnesota. Lake Region Small Animal Center is owned by Dr. Kendra Greiner.

The clinic specializes in canine and feline medicine, surgery and dentistry. The team includes Dr. Rachel Hedlin (associate veterinarian), Diane (office manager), Amanda, Carrie, Amber (certified veterinary technicians) and Penny, Danika and Maya (veterinary assistants).

2 year old Blu came in with very low energy, not eating, and white mucous membrane (gum) color instead of pink. Her physical examination revealed an enlarged spleen, high heart rate and heart murmur, and increased respiratory rate.
She was very anemic (very low red blood cells) and had very low platelets. When red blood cells go too low, there is not enough oxygen to continue all of the organ function. 🩸We started treating her for a condition called IMHA, where the body starts attacking its own blood cells and destroying them. IMHA is a very serious disease with a grave prognosis.

We started treatment immediately, and Blu began to respond. Within a week, Blu was feeling much better. Look at that pink tongue!! 🐶

Blu’s human was very grateful; she wanted to make this video for us and for Blu’s benefactor who helped with the expenses. 🙏
All of us in the veterinary field love animals and want to help them. The incredible bonus is that we get to love and help their families, too. 🐾❤️🐾

Sweet Sadie has a rock collection. The problem is, she was keeping them in her bladder! Look at them all! 🫣
We could feel the stones (uroliths) on her physical and we could see them on the x-ray (the bright white, lower right part of the x-ray).

Stones in the bladder can form when minerals in the urine crystallize and join together. Causes are multiple—it can be due to genetics, type of dog food, dehydration, or bacterial infections of the bladder. There are several types of stones, and some stones can now be dissolved with a certain diet! Other types of stones require surgical removal.

In Sadie’s case, we did not know which type of stones she had, and her humans elected to have them surgically removed to provide her immediate comfort. ❤️‍🩹Sadie is now healing and will be much more comfortable in a few days. 🐾🙌🐾

When Ollie came in, he was very sick and in kidney failure. Ollie had a urinary obstruction, which meant he was unable to urinate and toxins built up in his system. 🤕
This condition is common in male cats, and can be fatal. We need to sedate them, give IV medications to stabilize, and pass a urinary catheter so they are able to urinate again.
Once Ollie was stabilized at our veterinary clinic, his humans were willing to take him home and give him medication to continue treatments over the weekend.
Slowly, slowly Ollie improved and now he is back to living his best life! Here is his family that nursed him back to health—future vet techs and veterinarians! 🐾❤️🐾

Easton is one of our favorite patients, he has a happy and loving personality. 💙💙💙
When Easton was in a fight with another dog, he sustained deep bite wounds over several parts of his body.
Although he was started on antibiotics right away, within a few days he became septic (bacterial organisms in the blood and tissues) and his fever raised to 106.6. His blood pressure dropped, he was severely dehydrated and unable to walk. Additional pockets of bacteria began swelling over his chest. Easton was hospitalized, and we started large amounts of intravenous fluids, intravenous antibiotics and fever reducers, and lanced the abscess to drain the bacteria. His condition was very, very critical. Easton's humans brought him back and forth to the clinic for treatments for a few days before he could start oral medications.

We see several pets sustain injury by dogs each year, especially during the spring and summer months.
PLEASE keep your dog on leash or in a fence and have full control of them, whether you have a small dog or big dog…any time a loose dog runs up to or encounters another dog there is potential for trouble. Dog fights can happen very quickly, and are often preventable. It takes all of us. 😊
Easton weighs 92 pounds, and he almost died from his wounds. Small dogs can be instigators, but a small dog that is in a fight with a large dog has very little chance, and we regrettably see traumas that don't have positive outcomes.

Thankfully, Easton is well on his way to recovery, and he is home bringing joy to his humans and everyone he meets! 🙌🐾🙌

Winnie and Zara were such treats today. Zara was full of kisses and Winnie was full of cuteness! Their pet parent brushes their teeth, keeps their weight lean, and is very conscientious about heat--they are lucky to be so well cared for. 🙌
As a reminder, brachycephalic (short nosed) dogs can overheat very quickly as they have narrowed airways and narrow nostrils and do not have have the same ability to cool themselves through panting. Be extremely cautious in this hot, humid weather with any activity, and keep your pets inside as much as possible. 🐾🆒🐾
