🐾 FRENCHIE PARENTS: THE HEAT THIS WEEK IS NO JOKE! 🐾
With temperatures soaring, our flat-faced flatmates are at extreme risk. Because of their brachycephalic (short-muzzled) anatomy, French Bulldogs cannot cool themselves down efficiently. Heat exhaustion can turn into a life-threatening emergency in just minutes.
Here is what you need to look out for and exactly how to protect your pup this week:
Have alcohol wipes and lemon Juice ON HAND!!!!
🔥 Early Signs Your Frenchie is Overheating:
The "Spatula Tongue": The tongue hangs all the way out, expanding wide and flat at the bottom to try and catch a breeze.
Heavy, Loud Panting: Breathing that sounds raspy, roaring, or congested.
Bright Red Gums & Tongue: A deep red or purple hue (or dangerously pale/blue).
Thick, Foamy Drool: Saliva becomes sticky and builds up around the mouth.
Lethargy or Wobbling: Refusing to move, looking panicked/glassy-eyed, or collapsing.
🚨 Emergency Action Plan to Cool Them Down:
If your dog shows these signs, ACT IMMEDIATELY. Follow these steps in order:
1️⃣ Get out of the heat: Move them into air conditioning or directly in front of a strong fan in the shade.
2️⃣ Use COOL (not ice) water: Wet their underbelly, groin, armpits, and paws.
3️⃣ Keep air moving: Let a fan blow over their wet fur to maximize evaporative cooling.
4️⃣ Offer fresh water: Let them drink if they want to, but never force water down their throat if they are gasping.
If their mouth is foamy Use the lemon juice in the back of their throat to help clear the airway
🚫 CRITICAL WARNING: NEVER use ice or freezing cold water. NEVER COVER THEM WITH A WET TOWEL. This causes their blood vessels to constrict, which actually traps heat inside their vital organs and can trigger fatal shock.
When to hit the emergency vet: If your Frenchie doesn't start calming down within 10 minutes, or if their re**al temperature is 103°F or higher, get them to the vet immediately with your car's A/C blasting.
