AAZK’s purpose is to foster a professional attitude in animal keepers and aquarists by encouraging them to become active members of professional teams at today’s zoos and aquariums. AAZK supports the promotion and implementation of zookeeper education and strives to make the general public aware of our concern for all deserving conservation projects and the need for the preservation of our natural

resources and the species that depend on those resources. Serving as a professional organization for zookeepers, AAZK is a valuable resource for dedicated animal care workers. AAZK is dedicated to advancing animal care, promoting public awareness, enhancing professional development and contributing to local and global conservation through fundraising and stewardship. Our goal is to inspire and motivate through our roles as animal caregivers, educators and conservationists. Through workshops, conferences, newsletters, and internet forums, AAZK helps animal care staff stay current in husbandry, training, nutrition, and conservation. Well educated keepers using modern techniques means the animals in their care benefit tremendously.

Home sweet home. 🦉

This morning, members of the El Paso Del Norte AAZK Chapter volunteered their time to refurbish burrowing owl nest boxes on zoo grounds.

These nest boxes were installed by the chapter years ago for wild burrowing owls to inhabit our zoo’s man-made desert wetland habitat. Burrowing owls will often nest in drainage culverts due to urbanization. These nest will often be displaced by rainstorms. The nest boxes provide a safe environment for the local owl population to raise their young.

The refurbishments were done by chapter members Matthew, Noah, and Nicholas. This was made possible thanks to Joe, Luis, Angel, and Kenny of the El Paso Zoo who donated supplies and efforts to the project.

We look forward to our feathered friend’s arrival in their new homes! 🏡

In the animal care industry mental health is often cast aside for the sake of the animals in our care. Animal care workers put the needs of their animals before themselves. The burnout is real. The compassion fatigue is constant. Join us in helping our El Paso animal care teams get the help they deserve.

We are proud to join our local artists in in raising money to obtain mental health resources for animal care workers.

In consideration with Pride Month, the El Paso Del Norte AAZK Chapter will be allocating the funds from our 2023 Pride Month t-shirt campaign towards professional development for the El Paso Zoo team. The El Paso Zoo's structure remains sturdy through a diverse group of employees with various backgrounds and livelihoods, each one's effort deserving equal support as their fellow colleagues. As we are proud of our zoo's accomplishments, our chapter's goal is to constantly evolve and work towards improving our work efforts and environment. The funds from this campaign will assist in future trainings both locally and nationally for our staff, and in the long run, impact the welfare of our animals we hold dearly in our hearts.
