It was an honor to see teams from all over the country come together, including three teams from Mexico!

It is always beautiful to see quality handlers and K9s working together with purpose, trust, and dedication. Watching these dogs use their God-given sense of smell to help protect lives is a powerful reminder of the incredible abilities at the other end of the leash.

Seeing handlers put their best down the leash, and their K9 partners give their best in return, is brilliant to witness and an honor to be part of.

Always proud to be part of the Ft. Bliss K9 Unit. All those reps and sets paid off!

Is there too much dog training information available today?

In my opinion, yes. When I originally learned, I had mentors and several books. More importantly, I was encouraged to stay behind the leash.

Nothing teaches you more than being behind the leash. Nothing builds your confidence or deepens your understanding of K9 behavior more than working with dogs firsthand. Get behind the leash and stay there for years. Not months. Not weeks. Years.

Dogs will continue showing you things that may be new to you, even though an experienced trainer may have understood them for more than 30 years. Experience cannot be rushed. I see new trainers becoming overwhelmed while trying to learn and apply information from 30 different reels, countless opinions, and one YouTube video after another.

The best overall teachers are a knowledgeable human mentor and, you guessed it, the K9 standing in front of you.

Everything rolls down the leash.

Three weeks ago, Shadow would absolutely plow through you the moment his crate opened. He was unbearable to walk on a leash. He would not down. He would not sit. He definitely would not stay.

Shadow is still well under a year old. He was digging holes throughout the backyard, and his high drive personality was driving the entire household crazy.

Through an organized, positive reinforcement training program, Shadow is now performing at an entirely new level of confidence and obedience. He is excited, happy, and eager to continue developing new levels of obedience and drive.

We are truly proud of Shadow and everything he has accomplished in just three weeks.

Now, let’s take a look at how a dog 🐕 should be properly introduced to the beginning stages of friction, stress, new sight pictures, and unfamiliar training experiences.

It starts with small introductions. Within two weeks, this simple exercise will develop and grow into something much larger. For now, however, this is exactly where you want to begin.

You do not want to shut your K9 down by advancing them too quickly. You also do not want them to become shy or hesitant because they believe excessive pressure is coming their way.

You always want to gradually build your K9 up to pressure so they are never overwhelmed and remain excited to engage in the drive.

You may have a lot of experience as a dog trainer or dog handler. However, whether you are working with service dogs, obedience dogs, or K9 protection dogs, you are going to make mistakes along the way.

The question is, are you strong enough to acknowledge them? Are you willing to talk with others in the K9 world, accept feedback, and become better?

The dog is only as good as you are. One error in training does not make you the worst trainer or handler, but refusing to acknowledge that error can cap your growth and overall potential.

Do not be afraid to have others review your work. That is how you continue to grow yourself, improve your methods, and strengthen your entire K9 camp.

El Paso, Texas, is in a prime position to become one of the leading training and development grounds in the K9 world. We have professionals who have written the book on search and rescue. We have the border, which provides endless opportunities for narcotics and explosive detection dogs. In K9 protection and apprehension, the opportunities are equally endless.

El Paso also has several hidden gems within the professional K9 community, including highly experienced handlers, trainers, and outstanding training facilities.

For these reasons, I am proud to announce that Paws Down Best Dog Training and North American K9, LLC will sponsor and be present at this exclusive K9 competition. We will be ready to provide K9 development guidance, discuss handler maintenance programs, and contribute our experience across the K9 field.

We are sad to say that we will not compete this year. However, next year, we plan to have our narcotics detection K9 ready for competition.

Drive capping drills teach a high drive dog how to control intense excitement without losing motivation or working ability.

Drive capping is needed when a dog’s excitement becomes stronger than its ability to think, listen, and remain under the handler’s control.

Grimm is nothing but extreme drive. Overall extremely balanced. However without maintenance to keep balance. Grimm could easily lose his demeanor. Which allows him to brilliant under pressure of crowds and excitement.

The signs Grimm displayed that showed he needed this drill included biting the equipment prematurely, redirecting onto the leash, and losing focus due to extreme drive and excitement.

A dog is only as good as the handler guiding him. Grimm requires an excellent maintenance program that continues to challenge him while providing the appropriate level of stimulation. The goal is not only to achieve balance and control within his drive, but also to prevent burnout and boredom.

Grimm possesses tremendous working drive. The handler’s responsibility is to maintain that drive, direct it properly, and ensure that his excitement never becomes stronger than his ability to think and follow direction.

Su***de happens for so many reasons. More than I can list, or even want to list. This checks on more than just Veterans. This checks for every breed of person.

Mental health struggles are a pandemic, and lives are often lost when a person is alone with no tools available to help bring them back from a powerful moment of PTSD or another mental health crisis. I use PTSD here because it represents one of the many mental health conditions that can place someone in an overwhelming moment.

There are also many physical health conditions that require this same level of determination, drive, and purpose to keep someone going.

This is our often best support when we are alone.

This is a glimpse of our SVD in development from a young age. We begin early to strengthen these lifesaving abilities because when a genuine emergency happens, we do not get a do over. Fine tuning this as we perform reps and sets.

WHEN KNOWLEDGE MEETS PURPOSE

Paws Down Best Dog Training and North American K9, two veteran owned K9 companies, had the opportunity to work directly alongside the Fort Bliss Military K9 Unit.

Our purpose was clear. Help critique, shape, and develop both K9s and handlers.

North American K9 worked hands on with detection, protection, and apprehension checks. Paws Down Best Dog Training assisted with handler critique, maintaining drive during long searches, and working directly as decoys during apprehension training.

Detection work carried a real purpose. These K9 teams searched areas to help ensure they were safe for convoy movement. In the extreme El Paso heat, even the most fit K9 can become tired or distracted. Maintaining morale, drive, and engagement throughout the search becomes incredibly important.

During apprehension work, we focused on developing hard, deep, committed bites and teaching the K9 to drive forward rather than pull away or develop weak, shallow bites. Every repetition had a purpose.

What made this experience special was the mutual respect between everyone involved. The Fort Bliss Military K9 Unit, North American K9, and Paws Down worked together as one team. We critiqued, learned, adjusted, and made each other better.

These are the exact reasons our K9 companies continue to separate themselves from the rest. We continue to learn and expand in every aspect of dogs because we believe a dog’s purpose holds equal importance. From the family dog and Service Dog to the detection K9, protection K9, and Military Working Dog.

When the dust settled and the day ended, the dogs were better. The handlers were better. We were better.

More mission capable. More mission ready.
