Can a K9 actually protect your home and your family? Can a K9 protect you when you’re by yourself, perhaps walking down a dark street or simply making your way to your vehicle in a parking lot at night with low visibility?

Many of us believe that if an intruder enters our home, we will have the time to grab our firearm. We also believe that if we are aggressively approached or threatened, we will react exactly as we have imagined. The reality, however, is often very different.

Our firearm may not be immediately accessible. It may be secured in a lockbox. Under extreme stress, we may struggle to unlock it, or in a high pressure situation, our nerves may overwhelm us, causing us to hesitate or fail to access our means of protection in time.

Obedience work is a beautiful art to me. For me, I don’t think it’s training. I feel it is art. It’s a dance of repetition, resets, and love.

Obedience training is a beautiful bond that continues to grow and thrive. It’s why I love obedience training in non sterilized environments. This is where you can truly measure your chemistry and confidence as a unit.

This was Pie’s first time performing in public, with over 80 sets of eyes on us. She felt no pressure. I, however, felt too much pressure, which made me drop the ball. This means as a handler, I need to learn to breathe, slowdown, be clear with my hand signals, and verbiage. Pie is ready to win as am I.

Train in as many different ways as you can. Nurture your ability to bond and communicate with your dog by training in a variety of environments and through different learning experiences. This approach promotes growth while preventing boredom, giving your K9 something new to look forward to throughout its training journey and lifespan.

By expanding how and where you train, rather than relying solely on a classroom or by the book approach, you keep your canine mentally engaged, motivated, and eager to learn. Over time, this helps develop a dog that remains enthusiastic about working for the majority of its life while supporting its long term physical and mental well being.

Being welcomed as part of the El Paso community is an amazing feeling. It is humbling, heartfelt, and comforting. It feels like walking into your home, warm and soothing.

Seeing El Pasoans come together to celebrate our country, seeing our veterans, and seeing the smiles on the faces of adults, teenagers, and children made every hour of hard work worth it.

Tossing out tennis balls for dogs was just too much fun, and watching people admire our pack of German Shepherds is a memory I will never forget.

I have a passion and deep connection with all animals. But that alone is not enough to say I understand them well enough to effectively work with and train them.

I had to become humble enough to be honest with myself and admit that I needed help. So became my go to. Their guidance has helped me become more than just a person on horseback. They have helped me become a rider who is deeply connected with my horse on a spiritual and emotional level. A Native cowboy learning to work gently and respectfully with Little Sparrow.

Jessica Gomez has taken the time to teach me the proper foundation, strengthen my riding habits, and build my confidence in the saddle. You will probably hear her say, “Heels down,” quite a bit. So you may want to listen to her. When you stop hearing it, you’re finally doing something right. 😂

She is also a cool, fun trainer. She will forget more about horses than I will ever learn. Jessica Gomez has been a trophy 🏆 winning rider since a very young age. If you want to learn to ride and or anything horse’s husbandry she is the one!

Not every dog needs an E-Collar to be trained successfully. Likewise, not every dog needs an E-Collar at the beginning of its training journey. Some dogs may develop behaviors later in life that are best addressed through proper E-Collar conditioning and training.

The right dog, the right training equipment, and the right trainer can make an E-Collar as enjoyable and meaningful as any traditional lead and collar. When introduced correctly, an E-Collar can help override extreme anxiety, strengthen communication, build confidence, and further develop advanced levels of obedience.

An E-Collar is simply a tool. Like any training tool, its value depends on how it is used. It is important that we call an E-Collar an E-Collar rather than disguising it through clever marketing terminology. Understanding the tool, its purpose, and the proper way to introduce it allows us to make training enjoyable, productive, and fair for the dog.

The focus should never be on the tool itself. The focus should be on education, proper application, and creating a training program that helps the dog grow, succeed, and thrive.

People give doodles a hard time, but I don’t really understand why. Every purebred breed we know today started somewhere. Breeds were developed over generations through selective breeding to create consistency in temperament, structure, and purpose.

Traditional Labradoodles are still considered mixed-breed dogs, but multi-generational lines such as the Australian Labradoodle are actively working toward greater consistency and recognition as a distinct breed. That’s the same process every established breed went through at some point in history.

Instead of focusing on breed labels, focus on the dog in front of you. Train them to their full potential. A well-bred, well-socialized, and well-trained dog can excel regardless of what is written on its pedigree.

Last night was a special reminder of how far Paws Down Best Dog Training has come.

As a veteran-owned small business, there are many days filled with long hours, difficult decisions, and hard work behind the scenes. Moments like this allow me to pause and reflect on the incredible support we have received from the El Paso community.

I would like to sincerely thank El Paso Inc. for inviting Paws Down Best Dog Training to be a sponsor of Best Pet Pawty. It was truly an honor to stand alongside so many outstanding local businesses that continue to make our city special.

Most importantly, I would like to thank the people of El Paso. Every family that trusted us with their dog, every referral, every recommendation, every review, and every word of encouragement has helped us continue to grow.

While we are still a growing company, our vision has always been much larger than dog training alone. Training “Place” is not just about obedience. It is about building confidence, bravery, and understanding within the dog.

For humans, long distance commands may seem simple. For dogs, they require trust, clarity, repetition, and confidence to execute successfully.

This is why we teach “Place” in steps. Each repetition helps remove confusion while building stronger communication between dog and handler.

In this clip, we are developing long distance understanding by guiding the dog to the texture mat from a distance, helping strengthen confidence and commitment to the command.

Over time, these small repetitions become powerful long term behaviors.
