WHEN KNOWLEDGE MEETS PURPOSE
Paws Down Best Dog Training and North American K9, LLC.had the opportunity to work directly alongside the Fort Bliss Military K9 Unit.
Both Paws Down Best Dog Training and North American K9 are veteran owned businesses. There is something especially meaningful about veterans having the opportunity to return to a military environment, bringing knowledge and experience from another profession to help support the Soldiers and K9s serving today.
Our purpose for being there was clear. Help critique, shape, and develop both the K9s and the handlers responsible for them.
This was hands on work.
North American K9 brought valuable knowledge and experience into detection, while also directly working with handlers and K9s through protection and apprehension checks.
Paws Down Best Dog Training assisted by observing and critiquing handlers, offering valuable knowledge where improvements could be made, and focusing heavily on maintaining and reinforcing drive behind each K9.
We also worked directly as decoys with a purpose behind every repetition. During apprehension work, we focused on developing K9s to commit to a hard, deep bite and drive forward into the decoy rather than pulling away or developing weak, shallow bites.
Being a decoy is not simply about putting on a sleeve and allowing a dog to bite. The decoy becomes an important part of developing the K9. Movement, pressure, timing, presentation, and response all influence what that dog learns during the apprehension.
The purpose was to help build confident K9s that understood their job and were willing to drive through resistance while maintaining a strong, committed apprehension.
That same attention was placed on maintaining drive during detection work.
These dogs can perform long searches in extreme heat. Even an extremely fit working K9 can become physically tired, mentally fatigued, distracted, or begin losing intensity. A handler needs to recognize those changes and understand how to keep morale, engagement, and drive alive without taking away from the dog’s ability to work independently.
Detection was not simply about finding odor. These K9 teams were performing searches designed to help ensure an area was safe for a convoy to move through. Their noses become an incredible tool that can help protect every person moving behind them.
We also broke things down into smaller steps with individual K9s, working to ensure each dog understood how to seek a human through scent, locate that person, and transition into apprehension through K9 contact when required.
Every dog was different.
Every handler was different.
That meant watching, communicating, making adjustments, and understanding what the individual K9 needed rather than forcing every team into exactly the same picture.
There was also something about our time together that deserves recognition.
There was mutual respect.
The Fort Bliss Military K9 Unit, North American K9, and Paws Down Best Dog Training worked intricately together as one tightly woven team. Knowledge moved in every direction. Nobody needed to have all the answers. Everyone had something valuable to contribute.
Handler to trainer. Trainer to handler. Decoy to handler. Handler to decoy.
And the K9s were teaching every one of us.
By the end of our time together, we did not just make dogs better.
We made handlers better.
We made ourselves better.
That is what happens when experienced people can put ego aside, work together, critique each other, and remain students of the dog.
For two veteran owned businesses, there is also a deeper purpose behind having the opportunity to contribute to military working K9 teams.
Our objective was to leave every K9 and handler we worked with a little better than when we arrived.
Because these dogs and their handlers have an incredible responsibility.
They are being developed to protect Soldiers, complete the mission, and ultimately help take care of America.
These are the exact reasons our K9 companies have separated themselves from the rest. We continue to strive to do more, learn more, and expand our knowledge in every aspect of dogs.
From the family dog, to the Service Dog, detection K9, protection K9, and Military Working Dog, we believe a dog’s purpose holds equal importance.
Different dogs have different purposes. Different handlers have different needs. Our responsibility is to continue expanding our knowledge so we are capable of respecting, training, and developing the dog standing in front of us for the purpose it was meant to fulfill.
When the dust settled and the day ended, we all left better.
The dogs were better.
The handlers were better.
We were better.
More mission capable. More mission ready.
It was an honor for Paws Down Best Dog Training and North American K9 to contribute our knowledge, experience, and time to that purpose.
