I was literally about to write a similar post but Aura did it perfectly!

I’ve been around long enough to see breeders cull their way out of a nice line of birds.

Most people new to this hobby can find and obsess over a certain fault; whether it be toes, wings, crest shape, eye color.. But it takes a skilled eye to appreciate a birds virtues in light of the fault.

The mind of the breeder who can actually foster progress and preservation is entirely a “glass is half full” one. Possessing the ability and desire to keep and use birds for their virtues whilst keeping their faults in perspective is critical. Culling an excellent bird from one’s program based on the strength of a minor fault is merely throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Judging your birds only by faults is the best way to ensure that proper breed type is not maintained.
Instead you will find yourself left with mediocre because instead of keeping birds based on virtues, you kept them based on lack of faults.
