🦨 PEPE LE PEW SEASON IS UPON US! 🦨🐾
We’re getting more and more calls by the day from pet parents whose dogs have had an unfortunate run-in with a skunk! 😳🐶💨
As our evenings start cooling off, skunks are becoming more active and are back on the prowl. Here are a few things you can do to avoid a VERY smelly situation:
🗑️ SECURE YOUR TRASH
Double-bag anything extra stinky and make sure your trash cans have tightly secured lids.
🍗 DON’T LEAVE FOOD OUTSIDE
Pet food, scraps, fallen fruit and other tasty smells can attract skunks to your yard.
🐕 KEEP YOUR PETS IN SIGHT
Especially around dusk, nighttime and early morning. Even in a fenced yard, keep an eye on them!
🔦 CHECK THE YARD FIRST
A quick sweep with a flashlight before that last potty break might save everyone from a VERY smelly evening. 😂
🦨💨 BUT WHAT IF YOUR DOG DOES GET SKUNKED?
First things first…
🚫 DON’T GET THEM WET RIGHT AWAY!
🚫 DON’T REACH FOR THE TOMATO JUICE! 🍅
Tomato juice, tomato paste and similar old-school remedies aren’t going to neutralize skunk oil.
One of the most effective DIY options is a freshly mixed solution of:
🧴 Hydrogen peroxide
🫧 Dawn dish soap
🥄 Baking soda
Carefully work the mixture through the affected coat and down toward the skin, while avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth. Don’t allow your pet to lick the mixture, and rinse thoroughly afterward.
⚠️ NEVER store leftover peroxide/baking soda mixture in a closed container. It releases gas and can build pressure, so make it fresh and discard what you don’t use.
👀 SPRAYED DIRECTLY IN THE FACE?
If your pet was sprayed in the eyes, flush them immediately with plenty of water. If they’re squinting, very red or seem painful, contact your veterinarian.
And remember—the BEST skunk bath is the one you never have to give. 😂
Secure the trash. Check the yard. Watch those nighttime potty breaks. 🔦🐶🦨
