Digging serves multiple purposes beyond just making holes. For many dogs, it’s a genetic behavior deeply embedded in their DNA - terriers dig to hunt, northern breeds dig to create cool spots, and anxious dogs dig for comfort.

Understanding WHY your dog digs helps you provide appropriate alternatives. A digging box might satisfy a terrier, while an anxious digger might need more exercise or calming mental challenges. Address the need, not just the behavior.

Empowering Choice

Your dog can’t read your mind.
I wish they could! But here’s what many of us unconsciously expect:

We think they should “know better” about the couch rules when grandma visits.

Should understand that jumping is okay with us but not with strangers.

Should realize that barking is fine at the delivery truck but not at guests.

The situational nuances that seem obvious to us are not obvious to dogs.

Dogs are brilliant at learning patterns, but those patterns need to be taught clearly and
consistently. They are born not knowing human social rules.

Every new situation brings new expectations and those just might need their own
preparation.

When we accept this, training becomes less frustrating and more collaborative.

Bad Habits Don’t Just Disappear
“They’ll grow out of it” might be the most expensive assumption in
dog training.

That jumping on guests? Without intervention, it often gets
worse.

The demand barking? Usually escalates over time.

The pulling on walks? Becomes stronger as they learn it gets them to where they want to go.

Bad habits don’t t go away, but they will become stronger habits!

Behaviors that get the dog what he wanted, get repeated. If jumping gets attention
(even negative attention), jumping continues. If barking makes you move faster, barking increases.
The good news? You don’t need harsh corrections to change these patterns. You need to make the unwanted behavior unsuccessful while making the desired behavior more rewarding.

Simple? Yes. Easy to implement? With the right strategy, it can be. Worth it? Absolutely.

The sooner you address these behaviors, the easier they are to modify.

Holiday Prep Starts NOW

Your relatives are coming for dinner soon.

Right now, you’re probably imagining chaos - jumping on grandma, stealing food, non-stop barking at the doorbell.

But what if I told you that even a few weeks is actually enough time to see real improvement?

Not perfection. Not a completely different dog. But noticeable, meaningful progress that makes the holidays more enjoyable for everyone.

The families who have the most peaceful holiday gatherings aren’t the ones with “naturally calm” dogs. They’re the ones who started preparing before they needed it.

Small environmental adjustments now create big relief later. Think about where your dog will rest during dinner, what they’ll do when guests arrive, how they’ll stay occupied during meal prep.

You don’t need a miracle. You just need a plan.

Top Trainer Tip

Crate avoidance is communication, not defiance. Dogs who resist crates are often telling us the space doesn’t feel safe yet. The solution isn’t force - it’s patience and positive association.

Try this: Leave the crate door open and hide special treats inside while your dog is in another room. Let them discover this “treasure cave” on their own terms. Most dogs who previously avoided crates will start checking it regularly once they realize good things appear there randomly.

If you need help with your dog’s resource guarding reach out to learn how to handle it the right way!

There are some great ways to prevent food aggression, but messing with, taking or putting your hand in your dogs food is not one of them.

The more we mess with our dogs stuff, the more likely they are to become defensive around it. Just like we might!

The Complex Puzzle Trainers Solve

When I observe your dog, here’s what’s running through my mind:

Physical: Gait, body tension, breathing rate, ear position, tail height, weight distribution, eye movement, muscle tone.

Environmental: Distractions present, space available, surfaces, sounds, smells, temperature, lighting, other animals, escape routes.

Historical: Age, breed tendencies, past experiences, medical history, previous training, trauma indicators, socialization level.

Emotional: Stress signals, confidence level, frustration tolerance, recovery time, enthusiasm, fear responses, attachment styles.

Social: Relationship with handler, response to strangers, dog-dog skills, personal space needs, play style, communication attempts.

Learning: Motivation type, processing speed, distraction threshold, generalization ability, retention, preferred rewards.

Family dynamics: Consistency between family members, household routines, management strategies, everyone’s training skills.

Every dog is a complex puzzle of genetics, experiences, environment, and relationships. What works for your neighbor’s dog might not work for yours — and that’s exactly why professional guidance can change everything.
