***Informational post for clients***
All of a sudden there seems to be an influx of groomers/businesses giving “calming medications” such as Benadryl, CBD…etc to dogs WITHOUT OWNER PERMISSION.
When you drop your pet off for grooming, please make it clear nothing is to be given without your permission and an explanation of why FIRST. And if you are uncomfortable with it, kindly decline, pick your dog up and get a second opinion! This also includes if your dog is allowed to have treats. We don’t know if your dog has allergies or not! We should be asking, but in the event we don’t, please make it a point to let us know!
Also, something else I’m hearing and struggling with is prescription sedation meds being recommended for dogs that are “misbehaving” or “difficult” to do. There are very, very few dogs that ACTUALLY need sedation…all avenues have been exhausted first.I’m especially hearing about it with young dogs that haven’t even had a chance to be taught how to handle it!. I CANNOT agree with this at all. We as the professionals should be taking the time to teach your dog and ease them into the things that need to be done. And you as the client have to understand IT TAKES TIME! The haircut may not be perfect for awhile. As the professional, it’s my job to help your pet be ok with it and in some cases, they end up loving it! But even if they don’t love it, it’s our job to help them understand they are not being hurt. “Drugging” them does not help achieve this. So please, even if you have a groomer you trust, please talk to them and let them know you want a phone call before anything is given to your dog! Please share. If you don’t want to share, at least talk to your friends, family and neighbors and tell them to let their groomer know!
Sincerely,
