🍂🐾 FALL YARD HAZARDS: KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE! 🐶🐱

Autumn rains bring cooler weather, beautiful leaves, and unfortunately, some hidden dangers in your backyard! 🍄

At Mollet Pet Hospital, we want to help keep your furry family members safe and healthy. Here are three common fall hazards every pet parent should know about:

⚠️ 🍄 WILD MUSHROOMS
Some wild mushrooms are extremely toxic. Certain varieties can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and life-threatening liver damage. Never assume a mushroom is safe just because wildlife seems to ignore it!

⚠️ 🌰 ACORNS & OAK LEAVES
Acorns and oak leaves contain compounds that can upset your pet’s digestive system and, in serious cases, damage the kidneys or liver. Whole acorns can also pose a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage.

⚠️ 🍂 MOLDY COMPOST PILES
Rotting food scraps can develop dangerous molds. Even a small taste may cause muscle tremors, seizures, and other severe neurological symptoms.

🚨 **WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET EATS SOMETHING TOXIC**

🐾 Call your veterinarian immediately. You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.

🐾 Don't wait for symptoms. Some toxins can cause serious damage before your pet appears sick. Early treatment can save lives.

🐾 **Take a photo or collect a sample.** If your pet eats a wild mushroom, photograph it, including the cap and underside, if you can do so safely. A sample may help with identification.

🐾 Never induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so.

❤️ A little prevention goes a long way! Keep pets away from mushrooms, fallen acorns, oak leaves, and compost piles. Supervise outdoor adventures and check your yard regularly after autumn rains.

Losing a pet is heartbreaking. A microchip dramatically improves the odds of a happy reunion.

How it works:
✅ A chip about the size of a grain of rice is placed under the skin at the neck, right here in our office
✅ It takes just seconds and feels about like a routine vaccine, with no anesthesia needed
✅ If your pet is found, any vet or shelter can scan the chip to get your contact info
✅ It's permanent. No batteries, no maintenance, and it won't fall off like a collar tag

The numbers: According to the AVMA, more than half of microchipped dogs and about 40% of microchipped cats are recovered, compared with 20% or fewer for pets without a chip.

Even though the summer heat is fading, flea season in Oklahoma is far from over. Our warm fall temperatures create the perfect environment for fleas to stay active well into November — and sometimes longer.

Here’s what pet parents should know:

• Warm, humid fall weather = thriving fleas. Fleas only need temps above 50°F to keep reproducing.
• They hide in leaves, grass, and cozy indoor spaces. Fall yard cleanup often stirs them up.
• One flea can turn into hundreds fast. Their life cycle speeds up in mild weather.
• Pets with thick coats scratch more in fall. Fleas love the extra warmth as winter approaches.

If your pet is still itching, biting, or showing red bumps, they may be dealing with lingering fall fleas — not allergies.
