Temperatures are brutally freezing this week. Animals do not need to suffer in the cold. There is help. Please share this post with resources for anyone needing them.
- Report animal cruelty or stray animal concerns in OKC to 405-297-2255 24/7. If the animal is a stray, please try your best to shelter it on your own or bring it to the shelter so officers can address more urgent cruelty calls. The shelter is located at 2811 SE 29th Street and open 9AM-5:30PM daily.
- If at all possible, bring your animals inside your house where it is warm. They can be kept in the bathroom or a laundry room if needed. Even the garage is better than outside. If you need advice for behaviors such as house training or chewing, reach out to us for tip sheets.
- If your animals have to remain outside, provide adequate shelter with 3 sides, a waterproof roof, and insulation. Make sure the opening is facing away from wind. The best insulation is straw. In an emergency, a tipped over trash can with some sort of bedding can be used as a shelter.
- Ensure you refill water frequently as it will freeze. Provide extra food so that calories keep them warmer.
- If you need assistance with insulation, you can come to the shelter for hay and barrel dog houses (while supplies last). You can also contact Unchain OK for more free resources and advice by texting them at 918-917-9687.
- Ask a friend or boarding facility to board your animal inside while it is freezing.
- If all else fails and you cannot keep your animal warm and safe, please come to the shelter and consider surrendering your animal. While this is the last resort, it is better than an animal dying or you receiving animal cruelty charges. We are only accepting surrenders on an emergency basis so please try everything else first.
