🐈 🚨 Cat owners beware: Cytauxzoonosis (bobcat fever)
We’ve seen several cases of this recently in our clinic, and because it can become serious so quickly, we want to help spread awareness so pet owners know what to watch for and how to protect their cats.
Cytauxzoonosis, often called “bobcat fever,” is a life-threatening disease in cats. It is primarily transmitted by the Lone Star tick, but can also be spread by the American dog tick, both of which are common in our area.
Once infected, cats can become critically ill very quickly. Early signs can be subtle at first, but can progress rapidly. Once infected, cats can become extremely critical leading to death within days.
⚠️ EARLY signs to watch for⚠️:
* Lethargy or hiding
* Loss of appetite
* Fever
* Pale or yellow gums
* Labored breathing
Treatment 🩺💊
Cytauxzoonosis requires immediate, aggressive care, including hospitalization, IV fluids, anti-protozoal medications, and supportive therapy. Even with rapid intervention and reported cases of survival, the prognosis remains poor, and many cats do not survive despite intensive treatment.
💡 Prevention is key:
Keeping your cat indoors and on consistent flea and tick prevention is one of the best ways to reduce risk. Even if you’ve never seen fleas or ticks on your cat, that doesn’t mean they’re not at risk. Cats are meticulous groomers and often remove evidence before you ever notice it. That’s why consistent flea and tick prevention is so important, it protects them from what you may never see.
‼️ Important note ‼️
Not all flea and tick products protect against Lone Star ticks. Make sure you’re using a veterinarian-recommended product that specifically covers this type of tick.
Cats are incredibly good at hiding when something is wrong, and by the time symptoms are noticeable, the illness can already be advanced. That’s why it’s so important to act quickly and have them evaluated as soon as you notice any changes.
