Watch your horses carefully for any oral lesions that look like blisters or open sores. New Mexico has one confirmed and one presumptive positive case of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) in Sandoval County. The full public announcement is on the What’s New page of the NM Livestock Board website. Arizona has been dealing with sporadic cases since October 2025, and Colorado had a single case earlier this month. These cases have not had any history of travel and appear to be a result of local exposure due to increased insect activity near water sources. It has been a few years since we have had to deal with this virus in NM, so here is some basic information to bring everyone up to speed. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact our hospital, the livestock board or the office of the state vet.

🐾 “Fill the Bowls, Feed the Souls” 🐾
A Community Pet Food Drive for New Mexico’s Rural Shelters

Lap Dog Rescue of New Mexico and Simply Diego’s are teaming up to help local shelters and animal control facilities that are struggling to keep food bowls full during these difficult times.

Together, Simply Diego’s and Lap Dog Rescue are each donating 500 pounds of food to kick off the drive — but we need our community’s help to keep it going!

This donation drive will benefit:
🐶 Town of Edgewood Animal Control
🐶 Moriarty Animal Control
🐶 Torrance County Animal Control
🐶 Mountainair Animal shelter

Smaller, rural shelters are facing especially tough challenges right now. Rising costs, overcrowding, and fewer donations mean many animals are relying on community support now more than ever.

❤️ Ways You Can Help
🛒 Donate Food Online
$15 = One case of wet food
$25 = One large bag of food
$50 = Two large bags of food

We’ve made donating easy through Simply Diego’s online store.
The link may say “Lap Dog Rescue Holiday Donation Bundle” — we’re simply using that listing for convenience, and 100% of proceeds will go directly toward purchasing food for these shelters.

As cute as this sweet cat is; those long canines were actually very diseased with bone loss and mobility. She is doing great after her extractions! If you notice upper canines that seem to be sticking out, it is a source of pain; please give us a call.

Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted to humans through the bite of a rabid animal. Rabies virus infects the central nervous system, causing
encephalopathy and ultimately death. Signs and symptoms include aggressiveness, apprehension, headache, fever, malaise, sensory changes, paralysis, hydrophobia, delirium, and convulsions.
The incubation period is usually one to three months but can range from less than one week to more than a year. Death occurs in nearly 100% of infected persons. But rabies is preventable with proper vaccinations. Protect your pets and livestock with yearly rabies vaccines!!!
