A Letter from the Founder: The Value of a Single Breath
I was born at 6:06 AM on a quiet September morning, but I didn't enter the world screaming. I entered it fighting. I was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck, fighting for my very first breath.
That moment ingrained in me a lesson that has defined my entire life: Air is not free. Survival is a fight. And silence is dangerous.
I have dedicated my life to service. I was a Victim's Advocate, a CarePartner, Public Educator, a Firefighter, Fire Inspector, and an Advanced EMT. I ran into the danger and chaos when others ran out. I learned that safety isn't just a feeling—it is a discipline. It is a checklist. It is the refusal to cut corners when lives are on the line.
But recently, I learned that there are things more suffocating than smoke.
I learned that negligence can be quiet. I learned that "looking the other way" is a form of suffocation. And I watched what happens when voices—both human and avian—are minimized, ignored, or silenced.
Fiona's Heart Avian Sanctuary was born from that silence.
We are not just a rescue; we are a response. We are a "Never Again" built into a non-profit.
We do not break spirits here; we listen to them.
They thought they were burying us. They didn't realize they were planting seeds.
We are building a sanctuary where the water flows clear, where the truth is spoken out loud, and where every single heart—no matter how small—is defended with the ferocity of a fire line.
My name is Hillary Kevilus. I am listening for the soul's song. And Fiona's Heart is beating.
Welcome to the Standard.
