One of the most important things I can teach my kids is that technology should enhance woodsmanship, not replace it. Before we ever hung a trail camera, we spent time looking at the woods. We found tracks, talked about deer movement, and discussed why deer use certain areas. The camera is a valuable tool, but it's only one piece of the puzzle. By the time these kids are adults, technology will play an even bigger role in hunting than it does today. That's why I believe it's our responsibility to teach both. Learn how to read a track. Learn how to identify a travel corridor. Learn how to understand what the woods are telling you. Then use technology to help confirm what you've already learned. The fundamentals should always come first. That's how traditions survive, and that's how the next generation becomes better hunters than we ever were.

Most traditions aren't passed down during the big moments. They're passed down during the little ones. A walk through the woods. A ride in the truck. Feeding dogs in the evening. Following an old hound down a trail. Years from now, my kids probably won't remember every hunt, every tree, or every story. But I hope they'll remember growing up around good dogs, spending time outdoors, and learning to appreciate the simple things. That's how traditions survive. One small moment at a time.

⁉️DID YOU KNOW?🔊🚨One thing people not familiar with c**nhounds do not realize is how much a hounds voice changes with age. This is a clip of Tony making one of his first trees as a 8 month old pup. His voice sure has changed as he’s gotten older.

With Father's Day approaching, I found myself looking back through old hunting photos. This picture is only a few years old, but somehow it feels like yesterday. Back then, I was focused on the deer, the hunt, and making memories with my son. Looking at it now, I realize how quickly time moves. The little boy sitting beside me in this photo is 7 years old now. Since then we have had three more children. He has his own interests, his own opinions, and his own adventures. This morning he even cooked the whole family breakfast. Every year he becomes a little more independent. As parents, we're living through moments that often don't feel important at the time. One more hunt. One more walk to the stand. One more afternoon outside together. Then one day you look back at a photo and realize those ordinary moments became some of your most valuable memories. The deer, the bow, and the gear all played a part in this story. But they aren't what make this picture special to me. It's the time spent together. The older I get, the more I realize that's what the outdoors has given me more than anything else. A reason to slow down and spend time with the people I love.

🎙️ NEW SERIES PREMIERE 🎙️
The first episode of The Tailgate is now live exclusively on Patreon.
For years I've shared hunts, training videos, photos, and stories online. But some conversations don't need a camera. They just need a tailgate and a little time. The Tailgate is a brand new Patreon exclusive podcast where we'll dive deeper into the topics, stories, and conversations that don't always fit into a traditional video.
Future episodes will include:
• Behind the scenes stories from Stark Outdoors
• Hunting and dog training discussions
• Listener Q&A episodes
• Interviews with hunters, dog men, and outdoor industry professionals
• Business and content creation conversations
• Walk With Wick chapter breakdowns and discussions
• Historical stories and figures that helped shape the hunting world
• The lessons, successes, and failures that happen along the way.
For this first episode, I share the story behind Stark Outdoors, how a passion for hunting and dogs turned into a full time career, and discuss one of the biggest misconceptions I see when it comes to starting young pups. Whether you're here for the dogs, the hunting, the history, the education, or simply because you enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, I think you're going to enjoy what's coming.
Drop the tailgate, settle in, and join the conversation.

I'm forever grateful that Jax is the dog my kids will remember from their childhood. Looking back to when I brought him home as a 12 week old puppy 12 years ago, I never could have imagined where life would take us. He's the first dog my kids ever hunted with, but he's never been just a hunting dog. For 12 years he's slept at the foot of my bed. Every morning he greets the kids when they wake up. When they eat breakfast, he's right there hoping for a handout. When they need a friend, Jax is always ready. He's the best combination c**n and squirrel dog I've ever owned. He's the dog in the logo that helped build Stark Outdoors into a full time career. But when I think about Jax, none of those things are what matter most. What matters most is that years from now, when my kids look back on their childhood, Jax will be part of those memories. These dogs aren't just hunting dogs. They're part of the family.

Why CROSSBOWS Are Important
Not a popular opinion, I know, but let me share a little of my story. When I was a kid, nobody close to me really deer hunted. We raised c**nhounds and squirrel dogs. I wanted to deer hunt, but I didn't have much money. The only thing I could afford was an old used crossbow. That's where my archery journey started. Since that first crossbow, I've progressed from crossbows, to compound bows, and eventually to traditional archery. Every step taught me something new and deepened my appreciation for the outdoors. If it wasn't for that old crossbow and the first buck I took with it, who knows what my deer hunting journey would have looked like. That's why I think crossbows have an important place in hunting. They provide an entry point for people who may not otherwise get involved, especially young hunters.
The hunting community spends far too much time arguing about what someone chooses to hunt with. I'd rather focus on getting more people outdoors.
Because that old used crossbow didn't just help me get started. It helped create a lifetime passion for archery, and today it's a big part of why my four kids are learning traditional archery and spending time outdoors with their dad. Let's spend less time tearing each other down and more time helping the next generation get started.
