It's been a while since I did an introduction post so I thought I would give a little update of my own!

I'm Kendra Paulton, the crazy German Shepherd lady of the Black Hills (well, one of them!). My husband and I are raising our seven children (yep.. 7!) as the fourth generation on the Paulton family ranch in Custer County, South Dakota.

I had dogs my entire life growing up in Northern MN, and truly as a child I spent more time with my dog than I did my friends or siblings. My first ever dog was a German Shepherd/Scottish Collie cross named Callie, and I practically lived in the doghouse with her (by choice--haha!). Callie herded us children, fought off the Black Bears that would wander in, and was truly the best friend a kid could hope for.

Fast forward to high school and college years and we had to say goodbye to family doggo for a while due to practical reasons, so when I got married and established my own house, the first priority for me was to get a good dog.

After much research I settled on a German Shepherd Dog that I named Marta. That developed into raising puppies, and here we are over 14 years later (with a break or two in between) still raising dogs for families all over the country.

We outsourced our stud for the first couple of litters before I decided to invest in a male for our program. The now famous Kaiser flew to us from Missouri, the last pup of his litter that I purchased sight unseen based upon a recommendation from a trustworthy friend. Kaiser was and continues to be the absolute foundation of our program, and the legacy which we hope continues for generations to come. He is without a doubt everybody's favorite dog on the ranch, and every single person tries to claim him. The Old Man is now almost 13 and other than a little arthritis, he's in excellent health. He served a couple years as a therapy dog with Alliance of Therapy Dogs where he blessed the local nursing home, foster care support events, and schools, before telling me last year at age 12 that he was ready to retire from so much overabundance of love.

All of our dogs are health tested through DNA panels with Embark, have passing OFA scores on hips, elbows, dental, and heart, and every single one of them has outstanding temperaments for family and work environments.

Our children compete with our dogs in 4H, and I use a couple of them as therapy dogs certified and insured with Alliance of Therapy Dogs for foster care support, school visits and nursing home visits. Mama Leata is started in tracking and while we mostly just play with it now, my dream is that in the future she could be a part of local SAR efforts.

I believe every good dog owner, breeder, and trainer never stops learning and growing. Every year I commit myself to learning new things, seek out mentorships from people smarter and more experienced than myself, and continue to improve and grow in my knowledge of the breed and dogs in general.

Our dogs are good ol' ranch dogs with awesome temperaments, excellent health history, and minds that love to train and please their owners. They are truly part of our family and our community. I love sharing our dogs with you, and I feel privileged to continue to do this.

I'd love to see some PUPdates! Post in the comments below a picture of your current Legacy pup! I know we have many families with Leata X Angus pups and it would be so fun to see how they've grown! Truly though we would love to see ALL of them!

We have ONE male left from this litter. If you've been waiting for a Legacy pup this summer, reach out!

Second try was much better! This is why we have to be intentional to bring our dogs places! Aspen is fearless on the ranch but backless stairs were a huge nope from her until we worked them a few times!

But for real the Canine Collective facility and the people behind it are such an asset to the dog community in the Black Hills! Do yourself and your pup a favor and sign up for some classes

Exposure training at the Canine Collective in rapid this week. Aspen gives it 3 paws up because she says David forgot to put the backs on this set of scary stairs ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…

Puppies grow so fast, it never ceases to amaze me, truly. Fresh from the dryer warm, clean blankets, fresh raw goat milk still warm from the morning milking for mama Leata, and a few photos of the butterballs who I swear have almost doubled in size already.

4 males left in this litter, so if you've been waiting for one of our Legacy pups I wouldn't delay because these guys are going fast.

I'm trying do puppy assignments for this litter a bit differently where when people put deposits down on male 1 male 2 etc that's not necessarily the puppy you're getting it just means that's the order I received deposits. I'll take that into consideration, as I do typically have people who have given deposits a year in advance, but my plan is to help match everybody to the best possible fit based on needs/wants/lifestyle/temprament/and goals when the puppies are 7 weeks old.

This cross of angus and Leata produces an excellent medium drive family dog with the intelligence and ability to go into working and sport home for those who will diligently train and hone the innate abilities bred into them.

Parents have passing hip, elbow, heart and dental screenings, as well as full Embark panels (all official scores are available publicly on the OFA website and also on our gooddog page under each adult dog).

Local dog families, you are going to want to check out the Canine Collective in Rapid City! Is a community space where multiple trainers host classes. Check it out!!! We have been doing drop in scent work classes and it's so excellent!

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1B3rSdDZRw/

Co-founders David and Angela Dorn say their facility is designed as a community hub where multiple trainers can use the space to teach classes ranging from the basics of obedience to agility lessons.

The Dornโ€™s say their individual teamโ€”K9 STACโ€”trains family pets in addition to working dogs through their local and state contracts, including with Mount Rushmore.

Good morning from this crazy crew!!!

Well well well isn't this a surprise...

8 males
2 females

SHE'S DONE. This is by far the largest litter mama Leata has had, and I think it's due to the investment I made into what I consider what of the best dog foods out there. We became wholesale suppliers of Inukshuk, a human grade dog food brand made in Canada that was designed for sled dogs. We feed the marine (fish based) formula and our dogs have absolutely thrived on it. We know nutrition matters, and here is the proof. 10 perfect puppies, and they all came out with neck rolls. Incredible.

1st pick female, 1st pick male reserved.
7 males, 1 female available.
