Another achievement unlocked today ❤️🦕 Dyno and I enjoyed our longest trek together this afternoon on a stellar spring afternoon. Love this guy to the moon and back!

I’ve had horses on stall rest. We are 🤞🏻 nearing success on rehabbing an ACL strain on Koda the barn dog. A torn Achilles tendon on the barn cat is a new one for me! Poor thing is managing as you might expect, trying to plot her escape between bites of her breakfast, and giving her best “please help me human” face.

SOMEBODY figured out how to open his Dutch door for some close-quarter turnout time with his best buddy. That innocent CHESTNUT face is the guilty party 🐴❤️🐴

We were spared the worst of the winter storm last weekend - huzzah! Unfortunately we’re on track for SNOW on Saturday! So… winter storm prep round 2 began today! 😜😵‍💫

01/22/2026

Day 2.5 of winter storm prep: LP tanks are filled, generator test fired, extra feed, shavings, and hay stockpiled. Water stored in barn and troughs dumped and re-filled. Hoping for just rain but prepared for just about anything! 🤞🏻💪🏻🐴

Taking advantage of a relatively warm and WINDY day to hose off the bigger chunks of clay from some turnout sheets. If you’re wondering whose sheet is missing… that would be Dyno, who loves to roll but prefers the nice scratchy grass to mud ⭐️⭐️

Apologies in advance to those of you caring for horses in the frozen tundra of the Midwest and Northeast. Winter horse keeping is No Fun.

I am grateful for the gentle winter rain that will facilitate germination of the winter rye seed we’ve planted. Maybe not 3 days worth, though? 45 degrees and rain is not the same as 25 and freezing rain/ice/whatever, I get it. I left that mess with nary a second thought.

Today’s fun game of Beat The Forecast was designed to see if I could get everyone fed, horses turned out, and stalls cleaned before the rain started back up. Predictive radar estimated I had 3 hours. Piece of cake!

Erm… no. No cake was had. I lost today’s round by ~30 minutes, long enough for everyone to get in a good double mud bath before coming in to clean shavings, fresh hay, and plenty of water. I’m happy they had some outside time today at least!

Well I guess it’s been a minute…
A few weeks after that last post, life took a series of hard left turns that lasted for a year. Those turns have (mostly) softened to gentle bends in the path, but I won’t tempt fate to say it’s all smooth sailing now. During the darkest moments of the last 15 months, the horses at North Star Farm kept me going, and I owe them - and my family - a lifetime of gratitude.

Sometimes the universe sends messages. I’ll be the first to tell you that I wasn’t always able to be receptive to those messages. Last week, the universe was more insistent that I pay attention, and I’m glad I did.

Welcome to your forever home, Dyno. My sincerest thanks to Becca Segaloff at Capstone Farm for entrusting me with his care, and for making a very old dream come to life again.
