Grooming Myth Buster!

A lot of people think shaving a dog will stop the shedding… but unfortunately, it doesn’t. Shedding comes from the hair growth cycle, not the length of the hair. When a dog sheds, the hair is coming out from the root, so cutting it shorter doesn’t actually change how much they shed.

What shaving does do is turn long tumbleweeds of hair into lots of tiny little prickly hairs that can stick into fabrics even more.

Shaving also does not help your dog stay cooler in the summer. It can actually cause sunburn and impaired thermoregulation. Their hair insulates them from the summer sun and heat. Removing it take away their natural protection.

The best way to manage shedding is regular baths, brushing, and deshedding treatments to remove the loose coat properly. Your dog stays comfortable—and there’s a lot less hair floating around the house.

Groomers have a the tools and skills to help quell the shedding. We use deshedding shampoos and specialized tools to remove the dead undercoat.
