A growl is not your dog being rude. It is your dog being polite, early.
Families with a scared dog usually aren't doing anything wrong. They're doing what feels natural. Here are three swaps that work better.
Don't shush the growl. Thank the warning and give your dog more space.
Don't push a scared dog closer to the scary thing. Back up to where they can still play or take a treat.
Don't save training for the sidewalk. Start at home, where your dog already feels safe.
When a dog feels safe, their nervous system can settle, and a settled dog can actually take in new information.
A scared dog isn't broken. And a worried dog parent isn't failing.
