The heat is back on, and your pet’s skin may have noticed. Dry indoor air can bring on flaky skin, a bit of dandruff, and some extra scratching this time of year. A little seasonal dryness is common. Itching that sticks around, redness, hair loss, or a skin smell that wasn’t there before is not just the weather. If you’ve been counting scratches while watching TV, tell us. We’d be happy to help figure out what’s going on. 🐾

Happy Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week to the vet techs at McKeever! 🎉

From the first ear exam to the last recheck, our techs are the ones who make a tough day of itching and discomfort a little easier for patients and the people who love them. They’re skilled, patient, and always ready to help us get to the bottom of it, whatever “it” turns out to be. We’re so grateful for everything they do.

This recent 5 star review made our day. It came from an owner whose pet is feeling a whole lot better, and that’s the part of this job we like best, the relief!

If we’ve helped your pet too, a quick Google review makes it easier for other owners to find us when they’re dealing with an itchy pet or a stubborn ear problem! Just head to Google and leave your feedback 🐾

Pet weight gets talked about in terms of joints and energy, but skin is part of the picture too. Extra weight can mean deeper skin folds that stay warm and damp, which is exactly where yeast and bacteria like to settle in. Overweight cats and dogs can also have a harder time grooming certain areas, so those spots can get missed. If your pet has a smelly, red, or itchy fold, we can help sort out what’s going on.

One more thing worth knowing: weight gain together with skin or coat changes, like thinning fur or recurring infections, can sometimes point to a hormonal condition. That’s a reason to have things checked, not a reason to panic. Your regular vet is the best place to start for a safe, steady weight plan, and we’re always here when the skin needs a closer look. 🐾

Belly rubs count as a skin check if you pay attention!

Next time your dog or cat settles in for one, run your hands slowly over their body and feel for lumps or scabs. Part the fur now and then to look at the skin itself, especially under the collar and around the base of the tail. Ears, paws, and belly are worth a peek too, since redness tends to show up there first. And if you’ve noticed more scratching, licking, or chewing than usual, that’s worth mentioning to us, even if you can’t see anything yet. 🐾

A bath might not sound like treatment, but for many pets with skin problems, it is. Medicated shampoos can help control bacteria, yeast, and itching right at the surface of the skin, and they work best when they're used the right way. Contact time, frequency, and the right product all matter.

🛁 Questions about bathing your itchy pet? Let's talk about it at your next appointment!

Your regular veterinarian is the one who knows your pet best, and regular wellness exams are an important part of keeping them healthy. When skin or ear problems keep coming back or don't improve with treatment, that's where we come in. 🐾

Happy National Pet Wellness Month! If your pet's itching or ear trouble has you stuck, ask your vet about a dermatology visit, or give us a call to talk it through!

Have you ever found yourself staring at a wall of pet supplements trying to figure out which one to pick? It's hard to know which ones to trust, especially since pet supplements have very little formal oversight.

That's where the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) comes in. Companies can volunteer to join, and members commit to quality control, reporting adverse events, and honest product claims. They also agree to third-party audits and inspections. Companies that pass can display the NASC seal on their label.

Supplements can offer real benefits, so before you buy one for your pet, check the label for the NASC seal. If it's missing, consider that a red flag. 🐾 Still not sure what's right for your pet? We're happy to help, and so is your family veterinarian!

It's a story we hear often with pets who have more complex skin and ear problems. You notice the itching, so you take your pet to their regular veterinarian. They start an allergy medication, and the symptoms stop. Life is good! Then slowly but surely, the scratching, paw licking, or ear trouble creeps back in.

It's discouraging, but it's far more common than you'd think. It's called a treatment plateau.

Medication can calm symptoms without getting to the root cause, and chronic skin and ear problems often have layers, like allergies, infections, or both. That's where a dermatology visit can help. We look at the whole picture to find out what's driving the problem, so your pet can get lasting relief instead of a temporary break. Give us a call to schedule a visit. 🐾
