Winter is officially here! Unfortunately, that means colic is more likely to happen. Here are some tips to keep your horse healthy through the season!
1. HYDRATION 💦
In winter, impaction is the most common cause of colic in horses. Having access to water that is not frozen is crucial.
- Add electrolyte powder to their feed. This will encourage your horse to drink water, and they’ll waste any excess on their own.
2. FORAGE🌱
Quality hay being available 24/7 is very important to keeping the gut moving and making sure your horse has the adequate caloric intake to stay warm.
- Use a slow feeder
- Try to not change grain or hay during the winter, as this can lead to gastric issues.
3. TURN OUT⚡️
Physical activity and constant foraging is how horses were designed and it keeps their gut moving, reducing the risk of impactions. Horses with thick coats or a blanket can be out in temperatures as low as single digits!
- Have shelter available from wind and weather.
Be observant for signs of distress, restlessness, and discomfort. Scant manure, “flank gazing,” and lying down more than normal can be signs that they might not feel well.
