This should set off alarm bells for anyone who sees dogs presenting with behavior issues. I know for my own case load, pain (ortho, derm, GI, dental, etc) is something we spend a lot of time diving into. I have the advantage of assessing gait of any dog who comes to see me as they move around my space. And MANY of these dogs are sent back to their veterinarian for assessments of pain. While we have evidence out of the ground breaking MIlls paper (Mills et al 2020) that estimated that up to 80% of dogs coming in for behavior help have underlying pain, here is more radiographic evidence that aligns with these findings. 60% of the dogs aged 4-10 years old in this study had evidence of osteoarthritis in one OR MORE joints. This is not a disease of old age, this is a condition that affects dogs in middle age and younger. Assessing for pain in a behavior consultation is something that must occur. Relationships between behavior clinicians and your dog’s veterinarian can help these dogs. Behavior issues will not be solved without the resolution of painful conditions. I am thankful for the wide web of incredible DVMs in our area who collaborate with their expertise to add to our behavior plans to help these dogs. (For curious minds, chondrodystrophic dogs were eliminated from this study, or I suspect it would have have been higher percentages of OA)

A recent new study of canine osteoarthritis highlights how often this condition goes undiagnosed, leading to potential missed opportunities to provide adequate pain management and optimize patient quality of life.
