The mission of the Chippewa Valley Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is to rehabilitate injured/sick and/or orphaned animals and return them to the wild. Additionally, we hope to provide wildlife education to the public and information in response to any public inquiries concerning wildlife. Happy Wild Wednesday everyone and what a wild day of weather it's been! Today we're happy to introduce to you all our batch of baby raccoon kits for the season!
These three were all sadly orphaned and needed our help. Two of them are siblings who were found after their mom had been hit on the road. The third was found alone after the mom had been unfortunately trapped and moved days earlier. We always try our hardest to reunite but in the cases where we know Mom can no longer be in the picture that certainly changes the conversation. This is why we say it's so important to attempt hazing techniques over trapping and relocating, and why if you can safely stop if you see an animal hit on the road to please do so. Knowing these tips can help quite literally save a life.
Thankfully these three do have another chance at life and they are all doing excellently in our care. Raccoons require a large level of care and will be with us for many months before they're ready for release. For now they are still in their sweet but rambunctious toddler stage and are just starting to experience some new foods like bananas (a popular favorite) and soft mash but they'll still be getting their bottles for a little longer as well. Once they're completely on solid food they start getting more wild and independent quickly so we enjoy these sweet moments while they last.

Happy Thursday everyone! We have an exciting new face to introduce to you all! This little girl is a Short Tailed Weasel, also known as an Ermine in the winter when their coat turns white. This little girl came into us with her eyes just starting to open at a few weeks old. She was found when her nest was disturbed while turning soil for compost. Thankfully, the finder noticed her moving on top of one of the dirt piles and investigated further. She’s much too young to be on her own so she was brought into us!

We’re happy to report that after being with us for a few weeks now, she’s doing excellently in our care. She’s playful and growing like a little w**d. Fun fact about Short Tailed Weasels is that they have an absolutely voracious appetite and need to eat between one half to two thirds of their body weight every day in order to sustain their incredibly high metabolisms. To accomplish this, we weigh out her food and give her small but frequent portions throughout the day. Thankfully, she was already beginning to wean when she was brought in and is now completely on solid foods. Also because of this, she is growing more and more everyday and we love seeing her progress. In just a few more short weeks she’ll be ready to move outside into a pre-release enclosure where she’ll learn to hunt independently and prepare for returning back to the wild. In the meantime, we’re enjoying this up close view of her daily play and her speedy antics.

Happy Sunday everyone! We hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather on this Memorial Day weekend! We just wanted to take a quick moment and address a few things. We've been getting a lot of calls about people seeing wild ones out and about during the day as well as increased sightings along the sides of the roads. This is completely normal and to be expected this time of year! Our normally nocturnal mommas are often coming out during the daytime to search for food and to travel because they have their babies with them and it is much safer to be out during the day than it is at night to avoid predators. We asked that you please keep this in mind, slow down, and watch for them as you are driving. You absolutely can save lives just by being aware and slowing down. This is also a good time to remind everyone that if you do see an opossum get hit or see one lying on the side of the road, if you can safely check it for babies, please do. Opossum moms are definitely traveling with full pouches right now, so even if you cannot save the mom you can save the lives of her babies.

We also want to take this moment to remind everyone that right now we are going to start seeing momma raccoons moving her young kits around during the day, sometimes they travel along with her and other times she will park them in a safe place while she goes hunting and return to pick them up later. If you notice young raccoons alone but staying in the same place and they are quiet and looking healthy, most likely they are just waiting for Mom to come back. All you need to do is give them space and observe. Mom's not going to come back if she thinks they are in danger so give them plenty of space and only intervene if Mom does not come back or the babies appear injured or in distress. If you are worried about having raccoons in your neighborhood we implore that you opt for gentle hazing techniques to encourage them to relocate instead of trapping. A little noise and light can make a huge difference in inspiring mom to move on. Coexisting with wildlife is possible and it is easier than most people think. We need to remember that this is their home too. As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns or if you find yourself in a situation that you are not sure how to handle in regards to wildlife, please do not hesitate to give us a call.
