😸 Happy Cat Month! 😸

Celebrating our favorite feline friends and all the hard work they do for us…

Professional bakers - kneading muffins and biscuits to put food on the table for our family is a full time job. 🧁

Chief emotional support officers - laying in our laps and chest like a weighted blanket is standard procedure.

Laundry assistants - who else is supposed to inspect the warm laundry right out of the dryer? 🧺

Safety supervisors - if they don’t knock things down off of shelves and tables, they would otherwise be a safety hazard.

Protectors of the home - chirping and making strange noises at bugs and birds outside to keep intruders away, they are literally saving lives. 🐞

What’s up with this puffy ear? 🐾👂

Say hello to the aural hematoma! This uncomfortable condition happens when a blood vessel inside the ear flap ruptures, usually because a pet is scratching or shaking their head caused by an ear infection, allergies, or mites.

Our patient, Charlie, came to us with an aural hematoma from an ear infection. It was caught early enough that Dr. Leavitt was able to drain the fluid without surgical intervention. And she was such a good girl throughout it all!

If you notice your furry friend's ear looking swollen, puffy, or balloon-like, give us a call right away to talk about options! 🩺

You may have heard about the confirmed cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Texas and New Mexico. This parasitic fly lays eggs in open wounds, and the hatched larvae feed on living animal tissue. Early detection and professional veterinary care are vital to keeping your pets safe.

What to Watch For:

- Visible maggots or small white egg clusters in or near a wound
- Foul odors coming from the skin or a specific injury
- Unusual bleeding, pus, or drainage
- Excessive licking, scratching, or sudden distress around a sore

What You Should Do:

- Check your pets for any wounds or open hot spots.
- Seek professional care immediately if you spot signs of an infestation. Do not try to remove deep larvae at home.
- Stay informed via the USDA APHIS Screwworm Center for regional updates

As of August 24, 2026, there have been confirmed cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Texas and New Mexico. Wisconsin does not currently have a confirmed case of NWS. Call us right away at 715-835-0112 if you have questions or suspect an issue with your pet.

Our patient, Bandit, wanted to talk to you about cat parasite preventatives today - your cats are still at risk! 🚨

“My cat doesn’t go outside” is something we hear a lot when we ask about preventatives… but did you know many fleas, ticks, and internal parasites can hitch a ride on things that might make take a visit to your home?!

Shoes and clothing you bring inside, pests like mice, and houseplant soil can carry in eggs and other parasites. Your dogs can bring unwanted friends into the home. There could be pests hiding in carpeting from previous homeowners pets. 😱

It’s important to use prevention on EVERY pet in your house, including our feline friends! 🐈🐈‍⬛

Itchy ears with dark, crusty debris are a classic sign that your pet may be dealing with ear mites 👀

These microscopic, highly contagious parasites love to hang out in pet ear canals, feeding on skin debris and wax.

The good news? Ear mites are very treatable with the right prescription medication and a proper ear cleaning from your vet. 👏🏼

Even better news? Keeping up with routine external parasite prevention helps take care of ear mites before they become a problem. 🙌🏼
