🐾💉 IT’S VET TECH WEEK! 💉🐾

In honor of Vet Tech Week, we thought we’d answer a very important question:

What exactly does a Veterinary Technician do?

The short answer?

Yes. 😂

Nurse? Yep.
Anesthetist? Yep.
Phlebotomist? Yep.
Dental hygienist? Yep.
Radiology tech? Yep.
Laboratory tech? Yep.
Pharmacy tech? Yep.
Surgical assistant? Yep.
Professional animal snuggler? Obviously.
Dog wrestler? Occasionally. More often than we like.
Detective trying to figure out what your dog ate? Yep.

At Eaton Veterinary Clinic, we try to do as much as possible right there in the exam room with you—which means some of you have personally witnessed the controlled chaos. 😂

On any given day, our techs may be:

💉 Drawing blood from a 12-pound dog who has suddenly developed the strength of a silverback gorilla.

🐾 Placing an IV catheter while a Husky dramatically announces that this is, in fact, the worst thing that has EVER happened to them.

🩻 Taking X-rays and discovering once again that dogs do not understand the phrase “hold still.”

🦷 Cleaning teeth and uncovering things that probably qualify as archaeological discoveries.

😴 Monitoring anesthesia, because while your pet is peacefully snoozing, we are watching approximately 700 things at once.

🔬 Running bloodwork, urine and f***l samples—and somehow still being perfectly capable of eating lunch afterward.

💊 Calculating medications, filling prescriptions and triple-checking that everything is exactly right.

✂️ Trimming nails while your 80-pound Labrador becomes convinced we are removing the entire foot.

👂 Cleaning ears and discovering exactly how far an ear shake can launch cleaner across a room.

🩹 Creating a beautiful bandage only to watch the patient immediately begin plotting its removal.

🩺 Taking vitals while simultaneously giving treats, answering questions, holding a leash and preventing someone from eating the stethoscope.

🧴 Prepping surgical patients, shaving approximately 47 pounds of fur off a 12-pound animal and somehow going home with most of it attached to our scrubs.

📞 Answering questions, giving discharge instructions and saying “Yes, please keep the cone on” for what may be the 47th time that day.

🧼 Cleaning the floor.

🧼 Cleaning the floor again.

🧼 WHY IS THE FLOOR WET AGAIN?!

And yes, occasionally getting WAY too excited about a good p**p.

Veterinary medicine changes a person. 😂

But underneath all the fur, caffeine, mystery fluids and pockets full of pens we swear aren’t ours, there’s a much bigger reason we do it.

We learn our patients.

We know who needs cheese before they’ll even consider cooperating. We know who needs a little extra patience. We know who wants to sit in Mom’s lap, who would sell their soul for peanut butter and who walked through the door already planning our demise. 😂

We sit on the floor with the scared ones.

We cuddle them while they wake up from anesthesia.

We celebrate when the sick ones finally eat.

We cheer when their bloodwork improves.

We remember them. We talk about them. We worry about them.

And on the days when medicine can’t fix everything, we’re there to give them one more scratch, one more cuddle and all the love we can until the very end. ❤️

Being a Veterinary Technician means doing a little bit of everything—sometimes all within the same five minutes.

And we wouldn’t trade it.

Okay… maybe we’d trade the a**l glands.

Definitely the a**l glands. 😂

Happy Vet Tech Week to the caffeine-fueled, fur-covered, and sarcasm filled techs at Eaton Veterinary Clinic! Because we have not 1, not 2, but 3!! 🐾💉❤️

Better late than never!! 🥴😅

🐾🏆 PET OF THE MONTH: DOUBLE TROUBLE EDITION! 🏆🐾

Apparently one Pet of the Month just wasn’t enough this time… so meet Odin & Lemmy, the brother duo keeping their mom, dad, and probably each other VERY busy! 😂

🖤 Odin is a handsome Black Lab whose hobbies include fetch, swimming, more fetch, and—did we mention swimming? 🎾💦 Unfortunately, this summer he had to put his professional swimming career on hold while recovering from orthopedic surgery. We’re pretty sure he found this rule completely unreasonable, but he’s been such a good boy through his recovery! 😂❤️

🤎 Lemmy is an adorable Basset Hound who has one very important job: annoy—I mean, PLAY with—his big brother! 😂 He loves spending time with Odin and is always ready to join in whatever fun (or trouble) is happening.

Together, these two are sweet, goofy, lovable, and experts at keeping Mom and Dad on their toes. 🐾 We absolutely LOVE seeing these boys come through our doors!

Congratulations to Odin & Lemmy, our Pet of the Month brothers! 🏆❤️

We’re not saying Mom and Dad deserve an award too… but we’re also not not saying it. 😂

🐾 Prevention is powerful!
Spay your dog. Prevent pyometra. Save a life. 💕🐶

Pyometra is a potentially life-threatening uterine infection in unspayed female dogs, and the risk generally increases with age and repeated heat cycles.

After a heat cycle, hormonal changes affect the uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy. Over repeated cycles, those changes can make the uterus more susceptible to bacterial infection and fluid accumulation.

Signs of pyometra can include:

• Increased thirst and urination
• Lethargy or weakness
• Decreased appetite
• Vomiting
• Abdominal enlargement or discomfort
• Vaginal discharge

Not every dog with pyometra will have visible discharge, so its absence does not rule out a problem.

Pyometra can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. If an unspayed dog develops concerning signs, particularly following a heat cycle, seek veterinary care promptly.

Spaying is the most effective way to prevent pyometra.

🐾🌼 PET OF THE MONTH: DAISY! 🌼🐾

Meet Daisy — also lovingly known as Daisy Doodle or Big Dais! 💕 She’ll be celebrating her 10th birthday this October, and this sweet girl has certainly made her mark on her family!

Daisy is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi/Mini Aussie, and she takes her job as the household’s self-appointed “Fun Police” very seriously! 😂 If the kids or other dogs start running or roughhousing, Daisy is right there, running circles around them and barking until everyone settles down. Someone has to keep things under control! 👮‍♀️🐶

She also loves herding the chickens around the yard. She’s never hurt them — she simply makes sure everyone stays together and where they belong. 🐔

When Daisy isn’t busy supervising the household, you can find her enjoying her favorite things: treats, Benebones, and HER dog bed. And yes… she would prefer that the other dogs find somewhere else to sleep! 😆🛏️

Above all, Daisy has been a loyal and beloved member of her family from the very beginning. It’s easy to see why everyone loves their Big Dais so much. ❤️

Congratulations, Daisy, on being our Pet of the Month! 🥰
