Orcas Animal Protection Society

Orcas Animal Protection Society Orcas APS is a 501[c][3] non-profit organization.

Our Mission: Through operating an animal shelter, we advocate for the welfare of animals in need by providing community support and compassionate care. The people and pets in our community are deeply important to us because they are the heart of what makes this a place we are proud to call home. We believe that the well-being of animals and the well-being of people are closely connected—when pets

are healthy, loved, and well cared for, our whole community thrives. Our goal is to ensure that every pet has a safe and loving home, and that every guardian has access to the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to provide the best possible care. By supporting both animals and the people who love them, we create the kind of compassionate, supportive environment where everyone—two-legged and four-legged alike—can flourish. Services Provided
* Accepting stray animals or those relinquished by an owner;
* Offering cats and dogs for adoption;
* Training volunteers for animal care tasks;
* Scanning of found animals for microchip identification;
* Feral cat testing for FIV and Feline Leukemia, as well as spaying or neutering before returning to their home territory;
* Offering lower cost spays and neuters. Services Not Provided
* Accepting any wild animals;
* Accepting gravely injured or obviously sick stray animals;
* Euthanizing animals, except if in the best interest of the animal.

In a true community effort, Levi, the dog who swam from Patos Island to Orcas Island today, has been safely reunited with his family. He is tired and a little scraped up, but thankfully in overall good condition.

Thanks to the many heroes who helped along the way, Levi is safely back where he belongs tonight. What an incredible community we live in!

Because of supporters like you, we were able to welcome four cats from the Waldron colony we have been assisting for the past two years.

On Monday, we brought in “Mr. Edwards,” a senior cat who looks like he has been in more than his fair share of tussles over the years. Yesterday, Dr. Tiffany and the team were able to neuter, vaccinate, and microchip him.

This morning, we met the Loon to pick up a mama cat, Caroline, and her two kittens, Albert and Willie. They are all settling in well, and Willie is already happily accepting pets.

Thank you for making it possible for us to provide these cats with the care, comfort, and fresh start they deserve.

*** ADOPT ME ***
Chewie is a 65 lb, 2-year old, Alaskan Malamute Mix

He is resilient, highly trained, with independent and gentle nature. He is good with older children and has been with other dogs of all sizes (though has proven to be dog selective). He recently had a fight with another male dog in the home and I would not match him with a home with an established male.

Chewie is exceptionally smart and responsive. He learns commands very quickly. He is fully house-trained . He rings a bell when he wants to be let out, and has mastered a wide range of commands including:
Sit, Down, Stay, Wait, Come, Back, Leave It, Touch, Chin, Middle (tucks between legs), Selfie, High Five, Hug, Kick, Spin, Bang.

He is well-mannered at mealtimes, sitting and waiting for a release signal before touching his bowl.

He is being consistently trained on leash walk. He gets very excited and reactive when seeing other dogs so his new owner would need to keep up with walk training.

Because of his natural "explorer" instinct and curious nose, Chewie requires a home that can offer a monitored perimeter with
securely fenced yard and supervised outdoor time.

Can you provide Chewie with the love he desires? Complete an adoption inquiry to arrange a meet and greet. Chewie is currently at Orcas APS. We have also been in contact with WAMAL for assistance in placing him. Our goal is to place him with a breed specific rescue if an adopter is not quickly found on Orcas.

We’re thrilled to share that Winston and Muppet have found their second chance home! These sweet pups are off to start their next chapter, and we couldn’t be happier for them and their new family.

And just like that… five more little dogs are arriving today. We’ll be welcoming five Miniature Schnauzers to the shelter, and they’ll be settling in, getting to know us, and receiving all the care they need before they’re ready to meet potential adopters next week.

At almost three years old, Violet enjoys life and has lots of playful energy - capturing wand toys being one of her favorite pastimes!
