Our staff not only works hard to care for owned pets, but we also assist law enforcement agencies and local rescue groups with animals who have been subjected to cruelty and abuse. One of our newest patients is named Roman and sadly his owner moved away and left him abandoned in a garage without food or water for an extended period of time. He also had a very serious medical condition which went untreated and resulted in a very bad infection. Today Roman is doing much better and we are monitoring him careful to make sure that his recovery goes smoothly. He is of course a staff favorite and we can't wait to see what he looks like once he is all healed up.

Maggie is one of our adorable patients here at APAWS Veterinary Hospital- Detroit, who was rescued by Officer Delaney and some of his fellow officers from the Detroit Police Department, after she was found to be living in deplorable conditions in a home in Detroit. She was transferred to our friends at Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue by the police department and despite her tough past she is an absolute delight. She loves her medical team and we love her right back!

We are happy to report that Maggie's previous owner will be facing animal cruelty charges for the neglect and cruelty she was forced to endure.

Better days are ahead for this sweet girl! 💙🐾

We are ASTONISHED at this very unfair and tragic court ruling in the case of Miracle the dog.

Statement from Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue regarding the recent court ruling:

⚖️TRAGIC COURT RULING-CHARGES DISMISSED⚖️😡
In a very surprising and disappointing court ruling this week, Judge Giles of the 36th district Court, dismissed all charges against the defendant, Darnell Lamar Robinson, in the case regarding the dog we named Miracle who was found on January 30th, after some one had called authorities to report a "deceased dog on premises." The Detroit Police Department along with Detroit Animal Care and Control quickly responded to the emergency call and once they arrived to investigate the death of a dog, they realized that she was very near death, but thankfully still alive.

The DPD Officers at the scene rushed Miracle to
APAWS Veterinary Hospital- Detroit and after hours of intensive medical care, she was finally stable enough to be transferred to an emergency veterinary hospital for 24 hour care. She was in such bad shape that she had to spend 3 days at the emergency veterinary hospital before she was stable enough to be discharged.

Medical records provided by two of the licensed veterinarians who treated Miracle, each from different hospitals, made it clear that Miracle's poor condition was the direct result of starvation and exposure to the frigid Detroit temperatures. She had NO UNDERLYING medical issues which caused her to be near death... however Judge Giles ruled to dismiss all charges due to "lack of evidence."

So apparently having statements from two licensed veterinarians, along with reports from law enforcement officers from two different departments, multiple videos and pictures of Miracle's condition, along with additional witness statements, was not enough EVIDENCE for Judge Giles to be convinced that Miracle had actually been the victim of severe animal abuse?

We are truly ASTONISHED at this unbelievable and UNJUST ruling.

It is our understanding that the Wayne County Prosecutors office is already planning an appeal, however we are still very disappointed that any JUDGE responsible for enforcement of the law would rule in this manner.

Our hearts are heavy this week as our medical professionals agreed to assist law enforcement with a horrific case of animal abuse. One dog was found deceased and the other dog was found very malnourished and in need of medical care. Our friends at Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue funded medical care and boarding for the live dog and they also paid for our medical professionals to do a full and thorough neocropsy on the poor little guy, we named "Buddy" who is now an angel in Heaven. Thank you to Dr. Maddy Lutz, DVM MS (Veterinary Forenics Pathology) who came to our facility to perform the neocropsy, and to gather the evidence necessary for the criminal case against the owner of these poor dogs to move forward.

These dogs deserve JUSTICE and we hope through our collaborative efforts with law enforcement we will see more of these cases go to court with serious consequences against those convicted of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect.
