*I need to vent*

I love doing things for my community like back-to-school events and fundraisers.
Unfortunately, the last two weeks have really made me question why I continue to go out of my way to do these free events for kids.
At several recent events, I’ve had to completely stop what I was doing and put all of my animals away because parents weren’t watching their kids, and basic boundaries were being ignored.

One toddler went through my bag. I wasn’t upset because he was a baby, but what bothered me was that the mother saw what was happening, didn’t stop it.

At one point, a toddler ran up, grabbed Drax the Tegu by his jowls, and tried to climb him. My daughter immediately stepped in and pulled the child away, while the parent never did.

Another child repeatedly pulled on Mad Max the rabbit’s fur. The second time I said something, the parent responded, “Yeah, he does that at home too".
That is not okay.

My animals are incredibly tolerant. Just because they don’t hiss, run away, scratch, or bite does not mean they are comfortable or that a child is allowed to handle them however they want. Their patience should never be mistaken for permission.

My animals are not toys that children can do whatever they want with
They are living creatures that deserve respect.

Going forward, I may have to change how I do these events. If a small donation to interact with them is what makes people take the interaction seriously and respect the animals’ boundaries, then maybe that is what I need to do.

I don’t want people to misunderstand me. I love sharing my animals. I love educating people. I love giving my time to the community. That is why I do these free events, but I shouldn’t have to choose between giving my community a free educational experience and keeping my animals safe from children that have no respect.

Not all rescues come from bad situations. Some people take great care of their pets, but an unexpected or difficult situation may cause an owner to make the heartbreaking decision to find their pet a new, loving home. Rehoming a pet can be a responsible and caring choice when it is done with the animal’s best interests in mind.
Benny the Cornsnake came from an amazing owner that took great care of him. The way he was raised is why he makes a great ambassador for my rescue. Just this month alone I have had numerous ppl reach out (young kids to adults )
about how his gentle, curious, slow moving personality made them change how they felt about snakes. They even asked to hold him and laughed when they realized he liked to crawl up sleeves and into shirts.
If you take the time to learn their behaviors and treat them with respect they can be one of your best friends. Jason

💥💥 URGENT- WE DESPERATELY NEED VOLUNTEERS & FALL INTERNS! 💥💥
We have officially lost all of our summer interns as they return to school, and we are now desperately in need of helping hand🙏🏼
We still have hundreds of animals depending on us every single day, and their care doesn't slow down just because our staffing does. The work is never-ending ....laundry, dishes, cage cleaning, meal preparation, feeding, cleaning supplies, animal care, and everything in between.
We need help on BOTH shifts, but our night shift is especially short-handed. If you are available after 3 PM, we could truly use you. Even a few dedicated people willing to consistently give their time would make an enormous difference for our staff and, most importantly, for the animals in our care. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
🍂 WE ARE ALSO SEEKING FALL INTERNS!
Our internship requires a commitment of 30 hours per week( 25 after hours change ). Interns receive a weekly stipend of $125–$150 in addition to college credits. Depending on performance there are also opportunities to advance based on ability and work ethic.
This is hands-on work. It isn't always glamorous. You will get dirty. You will do laundry. You will scrub cages. You will wash dishes. You will prepare countless meals. But you will also become part of the reason hundreds of injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals get another chance💓.
PLEASE , if you've been thinking about volunteering or interning, now is the time. We genuinely need you.🙏🏼
There is no need to wait for us to respond to a message. Stop in any day between 7 AM and 11 PM, fill out an application, and ask to speak directly with the manager.
Our animals still need the same level of care.
We simply need more hands to help us give it to them. ❤️🦝🦊🦉🐿️

I want to give a huge Thank you to Newfoundland Area Public Library and everyone for showing up at our reptile event. We had a blast this afternoon.
