From the article: ""An interesting takeaway from the 2026 AHS Heartworm Incidence Survey was the reporting of heartworm cases in areas of the country where heartworm cases had not previously been reported or were rare," Dr. Ames said. Examples of those locations are southwest Colorado, central Washington, northern Idaho, northwest Nevada, and southeast Wyoming.

Reasons for local spikes in canine heartworm incidence are many and often intertwined, Dr. Ames said, pointing to a mix of factors:

Growing populations of infected wildlife such as coyotes moving into urban areas
Relocation of dogs through adoption programs that carry the parasite from endemic to lower-risk regions
Severe weather events like hurricanes and flooding that explode mosquito numbers
Families moving unprotected pets into high-transmission zones"

-Learn to recognize warning signs: Growling, stiff posture, or a dog trying to move away are signs the dog is uncomfortable.

-Keep dogs healthy: Pain or illness can increase the likelihood of a bite. Regular veterinary care helps identify underlying issues that may affect behavior.

-Support training and socialization: Positive training and gradual exposure to new people and environments help dogs feel more comfortable and confident.

The AVMA notes that dog bite prevention is not about breed, but about understanding behavior and promoting responsible pet ownership. Any dog, regardless of breed, can bite under certain circumstances.
