🐮Recently we have had an influx of Facebook messages and phone calls about wanting quick advice for horse/livestock illness and/or injury.

🐷Please understand that we DO want to help, but in order to do so we must establish a Veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) first.

🐴If you need routine or emergency care for your horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, or other livestock—please schedule a haul-in or farm-call appointment with one of our Veterinarians to get a VCPR established!! That way we can give you the quick advice and quality Veterinary care you’re looking for!!

🐐What’s a VCPR?🐑
The following UF/IFAS blog explains it best!

👩🏼‍⚕️Hi everyone!!

🍂Fall is in the air tonight!!!! Yayyyy!!

☀️>>🍁>❄️Gentle reminder for our owners of horses and other livestock as we have abrupt changes in weather:

-Clean, fresh, accessible water 24/7!!!

-Daily oral electrolytes, salt and/or mineral (loose or blocks) to increase drinking

-Add water to daily feed or offer 1-2 buckets of soupy feed/flavored water daily to improve hydration & gastrointestinal function (consider what is best for your animal nutrition-wise, ie metabolic/thick horses = low starch!)

-Have somewhere animals can warm up, maybe some shavings/straw to bed down in!

-High quality forage for horses & livestock is VITAL!!! For horses—if you’re using round bales of ANY kind please ***use hay nets over top to avoid impaction colic!!***

-Does your horse have a history of choke? Consider soupy mashes and soaked hay rather than dry to help them swallow! (Bonus: helps them stay hydrated!!)

🚑The average medical colic, choke, & dehydration treatment ON FARM costs owners between 500$-1,500$ — so let’s set your animals up for success this fall!!

📱Call / text / email Dr. Emily with any questions or concerns!! If not emergent, please contact 8am-5pm.

Dr. Emily is on call this weekend.

🐴✨ Please join us in welcoming a new face to the Iris Equine team! 🐴✨

We are so excited to welcome Dr. Kyleigh Anstey, our intern veterinarian, who will be joining us for the next six months!

You’ll likely spot Dr. Anstey out and about with us on field calls, or maybe even on her own at your next visit as she learns, grows, and gains valuable hands-on experience with our team.

Dr. Anstey has a particular interest in equine, cattle, and small ruminant medicine, and we’re looking forward to helping her expand her knowledge and skills across those areas during her time at IEVS.

We’re thrilled to have her on board and can’t wait for you all to meet her! Be sure to say hello when you see her out and about!

Welcome to the team, Dr. Anstey!

🚛As always, with or without Dr. Emily around, please be ready to haul your horses in case emergency referral is recommended or Dr. Emily/covering Veterinarians are unavailable.

🧰In preparation for Dr. Emily’s leave, please check your trailers are roadworthy and your Emergency meds/supplies are stocked!
