So, when working with rescue dogs, I find it's best to just start fresh. Leave the past in the past. We're never going to know what the dog went through and any details are sketchy at best. This dog was very cautious of me and didn't really want me to get close to her. She has strong prey drive that she was applying to squirrels and birds. So I tapped into that and brought out some tug toys and a "flirt pole". She began to chase, play and get comfortable with me. When we went back in the house at the end of the session I was able to pet her, feed her and take this photo! It's very rewarding to be able to tap into a dog and help them get comfortable and confident. Dog-town.net

So this guy arrived at our training session the other day absolutely wild! He was on a harness, bucking like a bronco, chewing the leash, jumping up and peeing all over. Totally overstimulated and acting out. I quickly went to my vehicle and grabbed an old school, correct fitting chain collar. Slid it over his head and off we went. Just some simple heeling, few turns and a sit. No heavy corrections, no yelling, no pain, just clear communication. This is what I need you to do and we're going to do it together. Handed the leash back to the owners and they had a much more pleasant class than anticipated. One advantage of working with me is I have just about every collar and leash under the sun. I know what will work and what will not. I encourage my clients to try different equipment. Then we determine what is best for the dog and what the owner is comfortable with. On the harness, he was just pulling and loading, becoming more and more frustrated. The sensation of a well fitting collar immediately calmed him and allowed us to show him what we wanted him to do. Once the dog and owner are working as a team and the dog is engaged and enjoying the work, the leash and collar become more and more of a "non issue".

So this guy is not your typical Bernese. He has very strong toy drive, strong obedience skills, and is super athletic. When he's heeling, it looks like he's floating on air. His jump work is clean and effortless. I love watching him work! Dog-town.net
