Why the long face (and the big ears)?

We wanted to take a moment to introduce Star, who has come a very, very long way over the past year. She was adopted as a feral mule, and because of this, our initial attempts to vaccinate her were unsuccessful.

Over the past nine months, Star has worked on positive reinforcement and clicker training with her owner and Danielle of Forever Farm. As of Wednesday, she was working on lifting her feet, stood for a short exam, and we were able to vaccinate her with just a halter and lead rope — such a 180 for her!

It goes to show that patience and perseverance can go a long way toward making sure equines of all shapes and sizes can be safely evaluated and treated by a veterinary team.

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks for our team, and we’re so excited to cap it all off by celebrating Dr. Berman’s wedding!

What the X-Rays Don't Tell You.

Horse people love clear answers. What time will the farrier be at the barn? When should I start prepping for my class? Is this horse "safe" to buy?

Unfortunately, most of veterinary medicine — especially when it comes to radiographs — isn't as black-and-white as we'd like it to be. Radiographs don't tell the whole story; they don't say "Danger Ahead! Do not buy!"; and they don't always define what a horse is capable of, so long as they receive the right care and maintenance.

These X-rays show a horse with developmental sesamoid lesions on both fetlocks, pastern DJD, and less-than-optimal hoof angles. The other photo? A very successful horse who has gone on to win numerous regional and national-level awards, including at this year's AQHYA World Championship. It's the same horse, doing its job, without being limited by its radiographs.

With appropriate care, maintenance, and monitoring, horses with radiographic abnormalities, like Lilly, can still live, work, compete, and be incredible partners.

As much as we'd love a simple yes-or-no answer, you can't put a horse in a box based on X-rays alone. That's why we always say (and mean) ride the horse — not the radiograph.

While some of us on the recent Equitarian Initiative trip to South Dakota were adding to the gelding population, others (including our beloved Bethany, a farrier apprentice who some of you might recognize!) were providing some much-needed pedicures to the range horse population. Our team is back on the East Coast after a long weekend at the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, where we worked alongside CSU students and the Equitarian Initiative to assist with castrating range horses.
