I had to get in on this trend!
But I have to promote what is near and dear to my heart!!! 🤣

I was SO excited in the video we did our first trot together and she caught on so quickly and gave no fuss. It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of horse things out there but for my very first young horse start…I am pretty happy with this. I have so far to go, yet.

This last year I have been trying to find my confidence in myself and clarity for my horses-it is starting to pay off.

Oh and you really need to take video review lessons with Rudy Horsemanship 🤌🐎

Soo much to learn 🫠

🐴 Horses vs 🫏 Donkeys: Similar… but Oh So Different!
Donkeys may be closely related to horses, but when it comes to care, they are not just small, long-eared horses. Understanding their unique needs is key to keeping them happy and healthy!
Here are a few important ways donkeys differ from their equine cousins:
________________________________________
🫏 Metabolism & Diet
• Donkeys are incredibly efficient at using nutrients—far more than horses.
• They are prone to obesity and laminitis if fed like a horse.
• Thrive on low-calorie, high-fiber diets (sparse pasture, straw, limited rich hay).
________________________________________
🫏 Hoof Care
• Donkey hooves are more upright and boxy than horse hooves.
• They grow differently and require a farrier familiar with donkey-specific trimming techniques.
________________________________________
🫏 Pain & Illness Signs 🚨
• Donkeys are extremely stoic by nature—they instinctively hide pain and illness.
• Because of this, signs are often very subtle: a quieter demeanor, reduced appetite, slight weight shift, or standing apart from the herd.
• ⚠️ Important: In donkeys, subtle signs are often late signs—and what looks minor can actually be an emergency.
• If something seems “just a little off,” it’s worth taking seriously and contacting us
________________________________________
🫏 Behavior & Handling
• Donkeys are often labeled “stubborn,” but they are actually thoughtful and cautious problem-solvers.
• They prefer to pause and assess rather than react immediately.
• Patience and trust-building go much further than force or urgency.
________________________________________
🫏 Parasites & Preventative Care
• Donkeys have different parasite patterns and responses to dewormers.
• Preventative care plans should be tailored specifically to donkeys, not copied from horses.
________________________________________
🫏 Coat & Climate Needs
• Donkeys lack the thick, waterproof coat of horses.
• They are more vulnerable to rain, cold, and damp conditions, so dry shelter is essential.
________________________________________
💙 Bottom Line:
Donkeys are wonderfully unique—and their stoic nature means small changes can signal big problems. Treating them like horses can lead to trouble, but with donkey-specific care and early attention to subtle signs, they thrive!

Scarlet is my very first young horse start 🐎

She has a really great mind, can be a little bit sassy when I don’t make sense to her, but the more I learn, the more I appreciate her personality 🥹

She has allowed me to mess up, try again, and has been so forgiving as I practice my timing and release. This is our very first sit in the saddle together since I started with her. It took us a total of 7 minutes on both sides, and she handled it well 🤗

She is just such a sweet horse 💕

Fun Equine Anatomy Fact you never asked for 🐴

Did you know the Equine hindlimb is also comprised of many of the same bones as our legs, ankles, and feet? If you did know, well now you have a little chart to remind you 🤷‍♀️😁

Who knew horses had a “leg” up on us… No? Not funny? 😬😅

“Humerus” Equine Anatomy fact you never asked for 🐴

A horses forelimb has similar skeletal anatomy to a humans arm/wrist/hand, containing many of the same bones, just shaped differently!

Shout out to Rudy Horsemanship for such cool video review sessions!! 🤗
