On this day 25 years ago, people kissed their wives, husbands, children, dogs and cats goodbye and left home like they normally would and went to their normal job on this normal day. On their commute, maybe they thought about what they’ll make for dinner or the argument they had with someone the night before or did they remember to pack their kids lunch in their back pack or where they’ll pick up a coffee before they get to work.
This was a normal day for so many, until it wasn’t. This day didn’t just change one city, one country, it changed the world as we all knew it. The entire world stood still and watched.
Since moving to NY, i’ve worked and became friends with some brave men that were there that fateful day. They didn’t talk about it like they were the heroes we know that they are. They don’t talk about what we all saw happen. But something I noticed when I watched them work or spoke to them is that they all take pride in what they now do and there is a quiet excellence in their stoicism. People that have been a part of something so unimaginable, something that changes a person forever and still go on to serve their community are heroes beyond words.
To those that lost their lives that day, to those who lost their lives since that day and to those who are still living with that day, we will remember you today.
