Here it is, the secret to me being 6 foot tall and still being able to ride relatively small horses. Also the secret to me staying on when said horses act up 🤣

Really though, this is great information! The physiology of both horse and rider affect how they will work and move together, and should certainly be taken into account!

The difference in a person's ratio of leg length to their torso length has a profound impact on the ability to balance in the saddle. The rider on the left has legs longer than her torso length. This automatically lowers her center of balance in the saddle compared to the rider on the right who has a longer torso compared to the length of her legs, which results in the rider being "top heavy" in the saddle.

This is a simple interaction of rider body mass placement in the saddle and gravity. The longer legs place more of the rider's body mass below the saddle whereas the longer torso rider proportionally places more body mass above the saddle.

The result often is that the rider with the longer torso on the right will tend to balance more in the seat than in their legs and seat, which is a challenge. In an extreme situation a rider with a longer torso can look like the Pillsbury Dough Boy rolling around on their butt in the saddle while they constantly unbalance their horse.

When teaching riding, the instructor of a longer legged rider only needs to tell the student to relax and let the legs fall naturally down to the stirrups. However, the trainer teaching the short legged, long torso person must tell this student to balance more using their feet in the stirrups.

When I get a student with shorter legs that torso, who is top heavy in the saddle, I temporally shorten their stirrups. This places their feet closer to the stirrups. Once the stirrups are raised and are more available for the rider, students usually begin balance more using their feet in the stirrups. In time, after they are regularly using their feet to balance, I lengthen their stirrups to help them lower their center of balance.

Teaching riding is more than yelling "heels down" to a class of students. Effective teaching includes assessing how a student's body type helps or hurts their ability to balance. We need to help riding students optimize the use of their body.

To all my clients, employees, and friends: your patronage and support has meant the world to me over these past few years! I’ve enjoyed helping so many of you and your horses improve your partnerships together, enjoyed the privilege of working alongside so many of you, and we’ve had so many happy and memorable times wether during lessons, shows, clinics, or just hanging out around the barn!

At this time, due to my daughter‘s increasingly complex medical needs, I find it necessary to take a step back from this business in order to focus on caring for her and ensure I am fully available to be by her side should further hospitalizations occur. I will still keep my personal horses of course, I will continue to be involved in WNYDA as a board member and volunteer, and I will try my best to see you all out and about at events as I’m able! However I will no longer be operating a boarding facility, offering training, or teaching lessons regularly for now. If any of you find yourselves in need of my assistance, I’m of course happy to consult via text if you send me a description or video of what’s going on! I’ll still be here for you as much as I can be! I thank you all for your understanding and well wishes; I’ve enjoyed this chapter immensely, and it’s not over, just on pause!

The annual Jeff Davis clinic will still go on as planned in October, but will be hosted by Dayton Wolcott at his facility in Warsaw! I hope you will all have an amazing time utilizing the obstacle course there in addition to the usual arena and trail work! Please reach out to him directly for more details (or let me know if you need to be put in touch with him).

If any trainers are interested in taking over the lease on this gorgeous and freshly updated facility to run their own program out of in the future, I am happy to put you in contact with the owner for further information.

She's almost three, so it's time to start those tiny first steps towards riding!

I've started so many young horses - I love the process, and I love the journey! There's something so satisfying about knowing that you've been a team since the very beginning! But the choices I make and the risks I'm willing to take have changed as I've gotten older, and especially since l've become a mother.
My daughter is fully dependent on me, even more so than most children, and l have to take that into account every time I throw a leg over.

So for that, and other reasons, I've decided that Stevie will probably be the last baby horse l start myself. And honestly I'm only willing to start her because she has had excellent handling trom the day she was born, coupled with an excellent temperament. Here's to starting over, one more time ❤️❤️❤️

It’s tricky to film liberty work POV style because holding the camera and looking at it to make sure she’s in focus both take something away from the body language necessary to communicate with the horse 😬 but luckily she’s a very good girl and we managed to pull it off! Vivian‘s rehab is continuing with this full body resistance kit from Eagle ProSix, a round of Zycosan, and regular shockwave therapy!

Thank you everyone for another amazing weekend with Jeff Davis-Clinton Anderson Professional Clinician! We did lots of groundwork, ridden work, and even hit the trails for some training in the wild! I hope that everyone had fun, learned a lot, and came away with some new skills and a fresh boost to their confidence! It’s almost that time again! From October 3-5 we will be hosting our annual clinic with Jeff Davis-Clinton Anderson Professional Clinician! Come out for three full days of good horsemanship and good fun! We start by about 9 AM each day and finish up around 5 PM with a lunch break midday! Clinic spots are just about filled up - just one left if anyone would like to make a last-minute entry - but auditing is available for $45 per day (free for all NKS boarders and staff!) and includes lunch, so please RSVP if possible so I know how much food to order for each day!

This clinic has been increasingly popular each year, and it’s always incredibly fun with lots to learn! Looking forward to seeing familiar faces again and welcoming some new ones! 🤠

Vivian has come so far - we didn’t manage to make a test happen day one, but we changed gears and dominated the breed show instead, taking grand champion! Then the next day we had the great personal success of riding a shaky, messy, nervous, but COMPLETE training level test!

I am nothing but grateful for every baby step, every small success, every day with this amazing horse that we all truly believed wouldn’t survive past Thanksgiving. It’s amazing that she is alive and a miracle that she is rideable, and everything else we do from here is just icing on the cake!
