When you make a breeding your goal should be long term not just the present. Anybody can make a decent hybrid vigor breeding. The f1 offspring are great, but when they reproduce it is often a great letdown. So what ends up happening is new stock is needed every few years because the pups keep getting worse and worse as the bloodlines get watered down more and more. Dogs that are once super popular, are soon forgotten and replaced because their offspring and grandchildren are a fraction of what they were.
Many people never question why this happens. But it is an epidemic especially in America. I have seen it happen multiple times.

If you dont know why this happens then you might want to step away from breeding altogether.

Short answer is, if you fail to create a prepotent bloodline, then you will not get consistency much past f1. You have to lock in the desired traits and get rid of all undesirable traits. This is done over years and takes alot of patience and vigorous testing.
If your constantly just crossing different dogs and producing hybrid vigor then you have never really created anything substantial.
A dog that is not able to reproduce itself consistently is really of no value for breeding.

“Retreat? Hell, We Just Got Here!”

Today, we remember the legacy of Marines who fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, helping to cement the Corps' reputation as the world's premier fighting force.

During the intense battle, the 4th Marine Brigade, comprised of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, fought aggressively through the wheat fields and woodlands in France, helping to stop a major German advance toward Paris in 1918. The Battle of Belleau Wood became a major turning point for the Corps, providing Marines with experience in large scale operations.

Legend has it that Marines were later called Teufel Hunden ("Devil Dogs" in German) due to the relentless tenacity while taking enemy positions during the battle. Because of the Marines’ unwavering commitment, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments were awarded the French Croix de Guerre, an award presented to individuals or units for acts of valor and bravery on the battlefield.

Semper Fidelis.

Yep exactly. You may have to start with a dog like this but you should quickly begin to create a prepotent bloodline.

Yep exactly.
You may have to start with a dog like this but you should quickly begin to create a prepotent bloodline.

So this is the typical type of breeding I see being done today.
No direction, no attempt at building any kind of pre-potency.
It doesn’t matter how many titled dogs you stack on a paper. If you just continuously outcross your going no where. Just breeding a “Line on Paper”. You’re sticking it to any future breeders that get your prodigy and want to breed in the future. You can’t concentrate specific characteristics without any form of tightening up of the gene pool.
What good is a scatter bred show champion or sport champion if it can’t influence its own prodigy??
Keeping it simple, as breeders, we really only have two tools in our toolbox, “out crossing” and “in Breeding”. Both are just as valuable as the other. To practice one method without the other is a recipe for disaster. Overly in**ed and overly scatter bred gene pools are a disaster to work with.
All I’m asking is to look into it. Just try to bring some balance to your Breeding’s….👍🏻

Think about all the breeds of working dogs that have been ruined or are currently being ruined. Think about all the ones that don’t do and can’t or won’t do 2/3rds of what they should do. Think about all the people posting about “maintaining or for the betterment of the breed” Think about all the “folklore” surrounding a lot of breeds(usually it’s your rougher/tougher hard charging types).. and the fact that most don’t realize it is just folklore because most of them can’t/don’t live up to it. Think about how many in those breeds are mere shadows of what they once were. Think about how working animals were bred to work and now in a lot of cases they’re intentionally bred away from that. We literally live in a world where cull breeding is more profitable and sought after than breeding an animal to do like it should (whether it fits your hunting style or lifestyle). We live in a world where folks want a “here and now” without knowing if it fits their needs and/or without even looking at any proof of what it is or does.

This book might be from 1915 but it is as relevant today as it was then. This is 💯 the truth and unfortunately is the majority of breeders today.
