We’re so excited to offer a new service on Saturdays at 10am:

⚡️SMALL DOG SOCIAL⚡️

Here’s where most people get stuck when DIYing training:

➡️ you’re following a tutorial, and you might think it just doesn’t work… but something about your timing or mechanics is actually a bit off

➡️ your dog may need a different approach, a different reward, or a change in the environment

➡️ you’re taking in so much information online that it’s hard to know what to trust

Videos of training for other dogs may be helpful for some tricks, but for more complex behavior issues, wouldn’t it be nice if the trainer in the video was working with YOUR dog?

At day training, we send you videos of us training your dog (while you’re at work), explaining everything we do step by step.

Instead of spending your time researching how to train, we’ll save you time by telling you what you should practice with your dog.

We know you’re not trying to become a professional dog trainer on the side… you just need solutions so that life with your dog is easier and more enjoyable.

Most attentive student in puppy class🥇🥹

Did you know we have 3 different types of puppy class (+ a bonus option)?

In Puppy Preschool, you drop off your pup for 2 hours of play, exercise, and enrichment with us (and then pick them up nice and tired 😴 🙏)

In Successful Socialization group class, you stay and learn about introducing your pup to new things and building confidence.

In Puppy STARters group class, you dive deeper into how to train your puppy - “sit,” “stay,” walking on leash, and more.

➡️ BONUS: if you want extra individual support, we also offer private puppy training in your home 🏠

Stop anxiety-googling every puppy question, crossing your fingers & hoping you’re doing things right, and come ask us instead!

Click the website link in our bio to see more details and get signed up, so you and your pup will be set up for success. 🩵

There’s a good chance your puppy thinks their name is “no” or “stopdoingthat” 😂

The puppy stage can be a chaotic, messy time (if you’re questioning your life choices right now, you’re not alone).

We’re here to teach you the best strategies to fulfill and tire out your pup, get them to actually take a nap, establish daily routines to keep your family sane, and support you through it all.

Drop your pup off for Puppy Preschool on Saturdays, help them become well-adjusted through Successful Socialization class, or start teaching life skills in Puppy STARters class.

(Most people start with one and then want to do more - you don’t just have to choose one!)

Ask the .dogs.durham owners, spring/summer outing edition!

As the weather gets nice in NC, you may start wanting to bring your dog to cafes, brunch, or breweries.

Some tips from your friendly neighborhood trainers:

✅ DO come prepared! Bringing a little bag of your dog’s things will help them stay successful.

🚫 DON’T feel guilty for leaving early or just leaving your dog at home. Many events (even dog-friendly ones) may not actually be enjoyable for your dog.

✅ DO reward your dog for existing in distracting, exciting, and new spaces around people and other dogs.

🚫 DON’T feel like you have to say yes to every person who wants to say hi to your dog. If you or your dog is uncomfortable, it’s ok to say “sorry, no - my dog is in training right now.”

Still feeling embarrassed by your dog’s behavior out and about? We recommend group classes that teach skills like focusing around distractions, leash skills, and relaxing on a mat.

➡️ Foundations, Life Skills for Teens, & Canine Good Citizen are enrolling now - reserve your spot at the link in our bio.

If your dog totally ignores you the second they’re a little bit distracted outside, you are not alone!

For most dogs, it takes some patience and effort to get them in the habit of listening to you when there are exciting sights, sounds, and smells all around them.

(Teenage dogs often particularly struggle with this)

If you’re trying to work on your dog’s focus around distractions, a group class is one of the best ways to do it

Upcoming group classes for teens and older dogs that work on leash skills, focus, and listening to you around other people and dogs:

🦮 Foundations
🐕‍🦺 Canine Good Citizen Prep

As a puppy parent, have you felt pressured to introduce your dog to everything in the world as quickly as possible?

There are so many checklists out there with exactly what to expose your puppy to within the first few months

But not all exposure is good!

Our tip: advocate for your puppy🙏

Let them go at their pace exploring new things. If you’re sensing that it’s too much or they’re nervous, you’re allowed to leave the crowded cafe or give them space from the scary thing.

Starting this early builds your pup’s trust in you and keeps their socialization experiences positive.

Don’t do it all by yourself - we offer Successful Socialization and Puppy STARters group classes, and you can even drop your pup with us for a couple of hours for Puppy Preschool!

Let’s be real: dogs have no idea how to walk on leash without pulling unless we teach them.

We have to show them that when they are walking by us nicely, extra good things happen.

What treats you should bring depend on your dog, but here are some guidelines:

🐾 small pieces - a little bite goes a long way
🧀 soft and chewy is often better than crunchy
🥩 stronger smelling treats (for many dogs, the stinkier the better)

Can’t seem to get your dog’s attention on walks no matter what you try?

Check out our upcoming group classes like Puppy STARters, Foundations, and Canine Good Citizen - all of these will help you with leash training among many other skills.

Even the most social dogs need rest breaks😮‍💨

During day training and our puppy play classes, we watch closely for sign that pups are getting to that point.

Some dogs know how to respect that their friend needs a minute to recharge, and some can’t quite wrap their head around why anyone would want a break 😂

If one dog is chasing another and you’re not sure if the dog being chased is having fun:

Get the attention of the dog who’s chasing and keep them with you for a few moments.

If the dog being chased comes back over and tries to re-engage, they were probably having a good time!

If they walk away and don’t try to re-initiate, they were probably trying to tell the other dog to give them a sec to catch their breath.

Ask your questions about dog play dates in the comments!

Gracie used to come to day training and run straight to her safe space 🏃‍♀️

And now?

She prances in like she owns the place, zooms around, plays with toys, and wants to be out and about.

The game changer was starting her in some beginner nosework.

Not sure where to get started? We have spots available in our intro to nosework class (link in bio)!

Drop your questions or experiences with nosework in the comments ⬇️
