With 50 staff members and over 300 volunteers to care for up to 3,000 animals per year. La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.

🐾 Besties on the block! Meet Chiquita & Virgil!💛

Some friendships just click, and these two are giving us all the feels! 🐶 Chiquita and Virgil recently enjoyed a downtown stroll with their volunteer buddies, and Virgil especially showed just how far he’s come since arriving at LPCHS.

At just 1 year and 7 months old, Virgil has grown into a confident, affectionate gentleman who enjoys meeting people, spending time with other dogs, and showing off his goofy side. And Chiquita? This 10-month-old terrier mix is a sweet, cuddly girl with plenty of love to give!

These two are wonderful reminders of how much dogs can grow, learn, and shine when given a little time and encouragement. ❤️

Now, they’re hoping their next adventure leads them to loving forever homes of their own!

🐾 Meet the Whisker Patrol! 🐱

Got a barn, stable, workshop, or other space that could use a little extra pest control? Our barn cats are ready to clock in! 🐭

For just $5 per adoption, you can welcome a working cat to your property while giving a deserving feline a second chance. These cats aren't suited for traditional indoor living, but they still deserve a safe place to call home, with shelter, food, water, and care.

It's a win-win: a new face around the barn and a second chance for a cat who needs you. ❤️

📍 Stop by La Plata County Humane Society to learn more about our barn cats and find your new four-legged coworker!
