The only consolation to being done riding horses and bikes is all the fun we get to have afterwards:

• a beautiful and spiritual whirling dervish ceremony

• a private Turkish cooking class (I think it’s traditional meatballs for dinner tonight)!

• a feast for the senses at one of the oldest bathhouses in the country

• sharing a happy hour on the rooftop with some Efes - the best local brew ever

We were on top of the world for our last ride today. Literally and figuratively!

Absolutely phenomenal rides for both groups today!

A ride-up pomegranate juice bar in the middle of rock landscapes run by 2 nice women. Yes,fresh pomegranate juice is delicious!

Fairy chimneys for miles with caves and dwellings carved out of the rocks. And an amazing cafe for lunch in their midst.

Nice sandy spots for some fast gallops and trails that went up and down and around, weaving through remote areas where the tourists don’t ever go.

Technical and tricky single track trails for both horses and bikes (I’m super glad to be in a horse, by the way)…

And it’s only the 2nd day. We’re all tired tonight so it’s dinner and bed for all of us!

After 7 days of being in the cities. We all felt so good to be riding! Beautiful and fun 🐴 + 🚴 = 💕

This is why I travel:

The barista who makes the best coffee in the world and whose favorite band is Black Sabbath.

The father and son duo that owns the small music shop and makes all of the traditional wooden instruments by hand.

The street corner “doner” deli that’s been operating at the same place for 60 years. Started by the grandfather, passed on to the son and now run by the grandson. Yes, the sandwiches were delicious.

The group of men that smoked a lot and worked upstairs making the mosaic lamps and metal by hand. They also served cookies to us, made by their mom along with hot apple tea.

The woman that’s been at the counter making 100s of pitas by hand every day in one of the busiest shops in Kayseri.

The small connections across cultures!

I love how they treat the street animals here in Turkiye. There are many, many cats and they all are very friendly and look so heathy. Everyone seems to pitch in to feed and take care of them. There are random piles of food at the restaurants, hotels, shops, parks, airports…

Even the pigeons have houses!

I wish every place was more like this.

I’m not a religious person, but religious rituals do fascinate me.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot while in Istanbul. They have 5 calls to prayer every day and each mosque broadcasts their prayers through loud speakers mounted on their minarets. You can hear them at the same time throughout this city of 15 million+ people; and probably a million or more tourists add that to this number.

But, the prayer times and the chanting do offer a few moments of reflection, connection, a reminder to take a pause, a breath
and to offer some gratitude for what is all around.

It’s all very much aligned with the mindfulness practices that I love.
