BARCS is out of space tonight, and we are concerned the situation is about to get significantly worse. Over the past seven days, 254 animals (mainly dogs and cats) have come through our doors. There has not been one large seizure or unusual intake driving those numbers up, it has simply been a steady volume of animals arriving throughout the week and not enough adoptions to keep pace. By Friday evening, that volume had filled every available space for both dogs and cats.

At the same time, we’ve been told that Baltimore City Animal Control that they have approximately 95 outstanding calls to work through.

For BARCS, that is deeply concerning. Many of those calls may ultimately result in animals being brought to the shelter, and we are already beyond capacity before that backlog has been cleared. We need to create space quickly.

BARCS opens at 11:00AM tomorrow (Saturday), and we are asking anyone who has been considering adopting or fostering to please come see us. Every animal who leaves the shelter creates immediate capacity for another animal who may need us in the hours and days ahead.
