Some small businesses become part of the background in the best way. They open the doors, learn your name, recognize familiar faces, and keep showing up year after year.

That kind of steady, everyday presence means a lot in a community. Old Peachtree Animal Clinic has been part of Duluth since 2017, and we’re grateful to be one small part of the neighborhood’s story.

“But the doctor said I could get whatever refill I want.”

If you work at a veterinary front desk, you've probably heard some version of this.

And usually the CSR isn't trying to make getting medication difficult.

There's a veterinarian behind that refill.

Prescription medications require veterinary authorization and an appropriate veterinarian-client-patient relationship. (usually 12 months)

Depending on your state's rules and the patient's medical history, that can mean your pet needs to be examined again before the veterinarian can legally or appropriately authorize another prescription. U.S. Food and Drug Administration is very clear on this.

Heartworm prevention is another one we explain constantly.

It isn't just:

“Fluffy has taken Heartgard before. Can I pick up another year?”

Heartworm preventives are prescription medications. And for dogs, annual heartworm testing is recommended even when prevention has been given consistently. The test uses a blood sample, because a dog can be infected without looking sick—and preventive medications aren't 100% effective.

The American Heartworm Society makes it pretty easy to remember:
Think 12.
12 months of prevention.
1 year =12 months.

So when the receptionist says:

“It looks like we're due for an exam.”

or

“We need an updated heartworm test before we can dispense that.”

They're not inventing hoops for you to jump through.
They're communicating the medical, regulatory, and hospital requirements the veterinarian has to work within.

And no—

“The doctor said it was fine last year” isn't quite the same thing as the doctor authorizing it today 5 minutes before close.

A current rabies vaccine is one of the most important ways to protect your pet: and your family. Rabies is a deadly viral disease spread through the saliva of an infected animal, most often through a bite or scratch. In Georgia, wildlife such as raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks can carry rabies and pass it to unvaccinated pets.

Georgia requires dogs and cats to have an approved, current rabies vaccination. Keeping your pet’s vaccine up to date helps protect their health, reduces the risk of exposure at home, and provides important protection for the people you love.

Take a moment to check your pet’s vaccination records. Not sure when the next dose is due? We offer affordable rabies vaccination options and can help you get your pet back on schedule. If your pet encounters wildlife, avoid handling the animal and call us for guidance. Any person who may have been bitten should wash the wound and seek medical advice promptly.

The goal is to stop the heat exposure, begin active cooling, and get the animal to veterinary care.

𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗚𝗡𝗜𝗭𝗘

Watch for:

• Panting
• Stopping activity, playing, or lying down
• Stumbling or disorientation
• A warm ambient environment
• Take a temperature if possible

𝗔𝗖𝗧

• Stop activity
• Move the animal to a cool location
• Call for help — including a nearby veterinary facility and assistance with transportation

𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗢𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗟

• Apply cool running water over the body, emphasizing areas with less fur and soaking through to the skin.
• Avoid applying water directly to the head and neck because of drowning risk.
• Continue cooling for at least 15 minutes, or until the re**al temperature reaches approximately 40°C (104°F).*
• The animal should become calmer and panting should improve.
• Pat the animal dry with a towel afterward.

𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧

After initial cooling:

• Transport safely to the nearest open veterinary hospital.
• Keep the animal in a cool environment during transport, using air conditioning or a fan when available.

𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴.

For a dog or cat with suspected heat stroke, stop the activity, move them somewhere cool, begin active cooling, and arrange immediate veterinary care.

* If the animal has stertor or stridor, you can continue cooling until panting clearly improves or the temperature reaches 38.6°C (101.5°F), whichever comes first. In all cases, stop active cooling once 38.6°C is reached.

These recommendations are from the 2026 RECOVER First Aid Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.
