Miel LLC

Miel LLC Walters Family Apiary, Miel Duluth, Honey and Beeswax Products She took on the business side of things when Sharilyn passed in January of 2022.

Mark and Sharilyn Walters along with Zach, their son, began expanding their beekeeping hobby into a business in 2007. In addition to the best honey in the Northland, they have developed lotions, lip balms and soaps using the beeswax. Their daughter Vanessa joined in 2020, after moving back to Duluth, to help keep up with all the production. These products use only the best ingredients available, plus beeswax and are 100% natural.

Once the temperatures start dropping here in Duluth, our bees don't exactly pack up and fly south. They're way cooler than that. They cluster! Fall starts to set in and the queen slows down her egg laying while the workers shift their focus from foraging to sealing up every crack and gap in the hive with propolis (a sticky resin from tree buds). And when the cold REALLY hits, the entire colony forms a tight ball around the queen. The bees on the outer edge act as insulation while the ones on the inside vibrate to generate heat. They rotate positions so no single bee stays on the cold outer shell for too long. The center of that cluster can stay above 90°F even when it's well below zero outside. That's the coolest example of energy transfer ever! The first warm days of late winter are when the bees take their cleansing flights, a quick trip outside the hive to relieve themselves after being cooped up for months. It's a good sign for beekeepers because it means the colony made it through the roughest months! Every hive won't make it, but they are surprisingly resilient!

Both flies and bees sip nectar from flowers. The difference is bees are intentionally collecting pollen to bring back to feed their hives. Flies just kinda stumble through pollen and accidentally carry it to the next flower so they DO technically pollinate just sloppily! šŸ˜…šŸŒŗ

Love me a silly bee joke! I hope you do too! ā™„ļøšŸšŸ¤£

Our bees love flowers but some blooms are practically invisible to them! They tend to gravitate toward species of flowers with an open-bloom like daisies, coneflowers, and sunflowers and since they have ultraviolet vision, they also bias towards purples, blues, yellows, and whites. Tubular flowers work well for bumblebees because they have longer tongues. A double-petaled rose might look pretty to us but it’s not often a place where you’ll find bees and red flowers in general are harder to spot unless they have ultraviolet characteristics. Native wildflowers like wild bergamot, goldenrod, asters, and clover are excellent choices for Duluth gardeners. They thrive in our climate and keep bees busy! A patch of herbs like lavender, thyme, or oregano that you let flower will bring in pollinators all summer. The simplest rule of thumb is that if it smells good the bees will probably find it!

Here is a Cosmos flower (cosmos bipinnatus) that Vanessa snapped a beautiful photo of with a busy bee hanging out collecting pollen!
