As we approach the 4 year anniversary of opening Diva Dog, I have been reflecting on my journey. I’ve been a “dog person” all my life. I checked “The Encyclopedia of the Dog” out of my grade school library so often that they forced me to choose a different book every other week. I’ve been working in grooming salons since college. I’m hesitant to reveal my age, but that means 20 years in the industry. Oh boy. 😂
When the opportunity to open my own salon presented itself I dove in headfirst (after some gentle prodding from my husband). I didn’t know the first thing about owning or running a business, but I decided to give it a go. I started grooming my first client dogs in a mostly empty building, just me, a table, a tub, and a Rubbermaid plastic drawer full of tools.
Four years later and a lot has changed. Diva Dog has grown to employ 3 other remarkable, skilled, dedicated groomers. We have an overflowing client list. I’ve done community events, trade shows, dog shows, and magazine and TV interviews. Our days are full, and so are our hearts. We’ve met so many new friends, human and canine. We’ve welcomed new puppies, new babies (of the two legged variety), groomed dogs for graduation parties, engagement photos, and weddings. We’ve also lost a few friends along the way, wishing them safe travels over the rainbow bridge.
A lot has changed, but one thing remains the same. My dedication to providing safe and compassionate service. Giving dogs what they need to remain happy and healthy. Knowing when to say “good enough is good enough” and not pushing a dog past its limits. A perfectly coiffed coat is never worth a dog’s wellbeing. I embrace the mantra of “humanity over vanity.”
This year I’ve had my own health and personal challenges. I’ve been so touched and overwhelmed by the kindness and caring that everyone has shown. I’m so proud of, and thankful for, my wonderful team. They stepped up in a big way this year to continue running Diva Dog.
All this to say, thank you. Thank you to my team, my clients, my neighbors, my friends, and my family for trusting and believing in my vision and helping me achieve it. Here’s to many more years of pampering the four legged Divas of Duluth. 🐾
❤️ Robin
