☀️ Keep Your Pets Safe and Cool During the Upcoming Heatwave ☀️

The weather forecast indicates dangerously high temperatures this week. Taking immediate action will protect your pets from severe heat-related illnesses.

🐾 Critical Summer Safety TipsProvide constant hydration: Place multiple bowls of fresh, cool water inside and outside.

🐾 Never leave pets in cars: Vehicle interiors reach lethal temperatures within minutes, even with cracked windows.

🐾 Walk during cooler hours: Exercise your pets strictly in the early morning or late evening.

🐾 Test the pavement: Touch the asphalt with the back of your hand for seven seconds; if it burns you, it will burn their paws.

🐾 Create cooling zones: Keep air conditioning running or use electric fans and damp towels for pets to rest on.

🐾 Know the signs of heatstroke: Watch for heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heart rate, excessive drooling, vomiting, or a deep red tongue.

If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area, apply cool (not ice-cold) water to their body, and contact a veterinarian immediately.

Sweet little Hazel came in for her puppy vaccine boosters this week! 🐾 She was so brave during her visit and absolutely loved all the snacks. Hazel wants to remind everyone how important these booster shots are, skipping them can leave puppies unprotected and make them very sick!

Medical Case Monday ✨ An otter-ly amazing patient! 🦦

We recently welcomed a very special guest from the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium! This handsome guy came in for a routine wellness visit and dental cleaning.

Just like your dogs and cats at home, exotic animals need regular dental care to stay healthy. Since you can't exactly ask an otter to "say ahh," we used general anesthesia to safely perform his dental cleaning, take full-body and dental X-rays, run bloodwork, and update his vaccines. While he was snoozing, we were able to:

🩸 Run bloodwork to check his internal organ health
📸 Take full-body and dental X-rays🪥
🦷 Clean and polish his teeth
💉 Administer his routine vaccines

Fun Fact: Otters have 32 to 36 teeth that are highly prone to fractures from crunching on hard shells like crabs and clams.

Here at Colonial Terrace Animal Hospital, it isn't just about our pets - it is about our local wildlife! 🐦

Last year, we installed a butterfly garden in a hard-to-access strip of lawn right behind the clinic building. We worked with Mowing to Monarchs to help source and obtain a great mix of native wildflowers and plants that will help support our native pollinators! You can see the growing plants most easily through the window in Exam Room 7! There are signs to help identify some of the plants, so we can become more familiar with them. If you haven't seen it, come check it out!

Contact Mowing to Monarchs (Dubuque County Conservation) for help in turning part of your yard into a pollinator oasis! Every little bit helps for those bees and butterflies and birds we all love and rely on! 🦋 🐝 🌻

This week, our tour features Red Fronted Macaw named Stewie! Did you know these incredible birds are one of the rarest macaw species in the world?

Unlike their rainforest cousins, these intelligent birds have adapted to live in the dry, semi-desert valleys of the Andes in Bolivia.

Native to the semi-desert valleys of Bolivia, they are known for their:
- Striking "Red Front": A bright crown that becomes more vibrant as they mature.
- Small but Mighty Size: They are the smallest of the "large" macaws.
- Playful Personalities: Often called the "clowns" of the macaw world.
