January is Walk Your Pet Month and Adopt Rescued Bird Month. Whatever the conditions are outside, walking your pet is one of the few daily rituals that benefits both humans and animals equally. Birds need loving homes too and there are rescues like Wasatch Avian Education Society where you can adopt, or foster, a bird if you want to help out a feathered friend. January 14th is Dress Up Your Pet day which usually we enjoy more than them. January 24 is Change a Pet’s Life Day. If you adopted your pet, a phrase I heard recently “saving an animal’s life won’t change the world, but the world will certainly change for that one animal” is nice to remember.

Christmas is a wonderful time to celebrate, but it’s also important to keep our pets safe during this time. Remember to keep tinsel, chocolate, and holiday treats out of reach and secure your tree and protect decorative light cords so curious paws don’t pull it down or investigative teeth cause a fire. When entertaining, provide a quiet place for pets away from noise and guests. A little extra care helps ensure a festive time for us and our furry friends.

October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month. This month encourages people to ensure their pets are safe by making sure vaccinations are up-to-date, identifying them with microchips and having an emergency plan for them in case of a disaster. It’s a reminder that all animals deserve safety and protection and is a good time to support organizations that work towards this for animals domestic and wild.

September is World Animal Remembrance Month and
Sept 14th is Pet Memorial Day. Both occasions are a time to remember and honor the memory of all animals. We all grieve after losing a pet, but this month is also a time to reflect on the impact animals, wild and domestic, around the world have on us and encourage action to protect these animals for future generations.

September 15-21, is Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week. Animals, such as those with special needs, certain breeds and even black colored animals are overlooked at shelters. If you or someone you know are adopting a pet, think about giving one of these animals a chance at a loving home.

August 16th, is Homeless Pets Day. A small act can make a difference so today consider donating, volunteering or just following and sharing a rescue group on social media. Every bit of support helps these animals find a forever home.
August 28th, is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. For anyone who has lost a pet, this day has deep meaning. Our pets leave paw prints on our hearts and this poem brings comfort reminding us our pets are healthy and happy and waiting for us where we’ll meet again someday.

July 4th is celebrated with fireworks, and in Utah July 24th too, creating stress for dogs so this is crucial time to creating a safe and calm environment for them.

July is Adopt A Rabbit month, July 15-21 is Rabbit Awareness week and July 16th is Guinea Pig Appreciation day.

Rabbits make wonderful pets, but are often misunderstood. They aren’t low maintenance pets and have unique needs to keep them healthy, happy and a good companion.

They are social and need interaction with their human family so it’s best, and safer, for them to live indoors. Rabbits are intelligent and curious and may explore by chewing so preparing your house for a pet rabbit is important! Spayed or neutered rabbits can be litter box trained. They are also healthier and happier with another spayed or neutered rabbit.

An appropriate amount and type of hay, greens and pellets will keep your rabbit from having serious health problems. Rabbits are considered “exotic pets” and need to be seen by a specialized vet and their care can be expensive.

Just like a large dog, rabbits can live 10-12 years so they are a commitment just like any other pet.

If a rabbit is the right pet for you, adopt from a shelter or local rescue. Often they will already be spayed or neutered and you may find a pair that already love each other and will bring you twice the happiness.

Yikes! Eight days into June and I haven’t posted fun and interesting animal observances this month.

This is the last day of Pet Appreciation Week which started on the 2nd. Life gets busy, and even though we always love and spoil our pets, we may not take the time to stop and reflect on the little things they do that make such a big difference in our lives. For me it’s the silly, quirky moments that, even though I may be in a funk, makes me laugh.

June 17-23 is Animal Rights Awareness Week. In the past, animal rights groups have received negative publicity for taking extreme measures to expose exploitation of animals in food and dairy production, animal experimentation, and the use of animals in fashion, etc. We can let our voices be heard by buying food from animals who have been humanely treated and reduce the number of animals who are subjected to extremely painful testing for household cleaning products, cosmetics and more by buy Cruelty Free products.

In August, I had the honor of taking this precious dog Ember to be a part of a wedding ceremony. The wedding took place at a venue in the mountains and the weddding party had to arrive early. I spent time with Ember at her house, and at the appropriate time, took her to the venue where I waited with her until it was time for her to walk down the aisle. After that, she was brought back to stay with me until it was time for pictures. Once pictures were done, I took Ember home and gave her a well deserved treat.

May is Be Kind to Animals and Chip Your Pet month. May 5-11, is Be Kind To Animals and National Pet week.

It’s not hard to be kind to our pets, but this month reminds that whether the animal has fur or feathers, they all deserve our kindness.

The kindest thing you can do for your pet is microchip them, and just as important, keep your contact information up to date with the company who issued the chip.

May 11, is National Pet Preparedness Day and thanks to Snowball, a small white dog separated from his family during Hurricane Katrina, Congress passed the Pets Evacuation and Transportatoin Standards (PETS) Act. This law requires states to include pets in their evacuation plans. While PETS offers some reassurance- ensuring certain shelters and Animal Services are designated as safe havens for pets during natural disasters - it is still essential for pet owners to include their animals in their personal evacuation plans.

For more information on building a pet disaster preparedness kit, go to www.cdc.gov.

April is the month of Prevention to Cruelty To Animals Month and includes 4/11 as National Pet Day, 4/19 as Pet Owners Day and 4/30 as National Animal Advocacy Day.

This highlights the fact that not all animals get care they deserve and many times experience cruelty. If we see this, it is our responsibility to contact Animal Services so they can possibly remove the animal from the situation.

In contrast, on National Pet Day and Pet Owners Day recognizes the majority of pets have amazing owners who would do anything to make sure all their needs are met and love them unconditionally. And, I think we would all agree that every day is National Pet Day!

February is a few days away and it is Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month and Responsible Pet Owner Month.

Rabbits make wonderful pets, but have unique needs and are often misunderstood and neglected. If you do your research and think a rabbit is a good companion for you, adopt from a local Humane Society or rabbit rescue. Rabbits adopted from most shelters and rescues are healthy, spayed or neutered and are waiting for a loving home.

Everyone knows February 14th is a day we think of love. For pet owners, we feel the love for our pets all the time! Animals require the basics like food, water and shelter, but a responsible pet owner provides much more and this month is a good time to make sure you’re doing all you can. Are your pets getting enough exercise and socialization? Is their microchip information up to date so they can be identified if they get lost? Have you taken them to the vet in the time recommended for that specific pet to make sure they are healthy? Our pets depend on us for all these things.

The week of February 16-22, is National Justice for Animals Week and February 22nd is National Wildlife Day.

On Valentine’s Day, there may be food, candy and flowers that you need to keep out of your pets reach! Dogs will want to eat toxic amounts of chocolate and, depending on the dog’s weight and how much and what type of chocolate they eat, it could be deadly. If you have house rabbits or cats, make sure they can’t get to bouquets that include Lilies because those are toxic to them and could cause illness or death.
